. There were no arrivals or departures yesterday. The s.s. Kennedy is still bar-bound here, and the p.s. Charles Edward is similarly circumstanced at Hokitika. TJie barque Jane Spiers, Captain Beer, arrived in: Lyttelton Harbor on Tuesday night, 6th inst./ from Newcastle; left that rport on 20th .April ; had moderate variable winds with easterly swell until the 23rd, when it commenced to blow, with heavy rain and sleet, accompanied -with lightning and thunder; from this date to the 28th, had a, continuous heavy gale from west to south-west, with fearful cross seas running ; tried to lay the vessel to, but she shij>ped such heavy seas and rolled so fearfully, that it was impossible to do so ; on the 27th, at 7 p.m.^ a sea struck the ship just before the miz2en rigging, starting the break of the poop, and causing the deck house to leak all over, so that not a dry berth was procurable, the ship's stores also being damaged ; several continuous heavy seas kept rolling over, notwithstanding every endeavor to prevent the same ; at . 1 1 p.m. another heavy sea broke on board, smashing the pinnace in the skids, and' washing away a quantity of the bulwarks, and springing the upper main topsail yard. The long boat (a new one), was rilled several times, but fortunately was not injured ; on the 29th, the wind moderated, and a course shaped for Cook's Straits, the vessel at that time being within two days' sail of North Cape, having had to keep the vessel away / 2nd May, sighted Cape Farewell, arriving as above, with a cargo of coal. Passed the barque James Hannell and Waratah in Cook-s Straits, all well.
