EISTRICT COURT.

Wednesday, February 12. (Before His Honor Judge Harvey.) His Honor took his seat upon the bench punctually at ten o'clock. Several persons who had been summoned as jurymen were not present when their names were called, and his Honor ordered them to be fined LI each. Some of them subsequently appeared, and, on sufficient excuse being given, the fines were remitted. STEALING MONEY. Jeannette Wicks was charged with having stolen L2O from Patrick Brophy on the 25th of December last. Mr South, as Crown Prosecutor, stated the case for the prosecution. ' Mr Newton appeared for the prisoner. When the first and principal witness, Patrick Brophy, was called, he did not appear, and his Honor having ordered his recognisances to be estreated, directed the jury to acquit the prisoner. An acquittal was recorded, and the Court was proceeding with the hearing of another case when Brophy appeared. He was informed of the effect of his absence, both with regard to himself and the prisoner, and was further informed that there was no alternative for him but to apply to the Colonial Secretary for a remission of the penalty which be had incurred by his non-appearance. His Honor, in remarking upon the case as stated by the Crown Prosecutor, said it necessarily hinged upon the evidence of Brophy, and it was a very weak case at that. OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. Andrew Charles Ferguson Morrison was charged with obtaining 25s from Edward Ancber by false pretences. Mr Perkins appeared for the defence, and, having stated that there were doubts as to the prisoner's sanity, the Crown Prosecutor, with the leave of the Court, consented to an adjournment of the trial until to-day, when evidence will be given as to the point raised. The Court was then adjourned until ten o'clock this (Thursday) morning.
