DUNEDIN.

(kkoji our own; correspondent.) .• • • February 23. The Governor's visit is drawing to a close. He starts to-day for the interior of the Province, proceeding north to Oam aru, then westward to Lakes Wanaka and Wakatip, and so b. the Dunstan and other gold fields back to town; after which lie proceeds to Wellington again. Thi3 hurried termination to the programme is in consequence" of strange doings on the part of the Imperial Government,, in regard to the sending home of the. military, which render Sir George's presenca in,;the. North necessary at once. His Excellency was entertained at a Fete got up by the Friendly Societies, at Vauxhall on Monday last, one of the most suc-;^ cessful tilings of the kind which ever took place at these gardens. There has been a ball or a concert every evening since, at which;, the Governor and his suite were present. The one last night was by far the most splendid of the series, neither labor, skill, nor ; money.having been spared in the get-up. It was of a private nature, being one given to the Governor by Mr John Jones, of Dunedin. About 230 of the elite of the neighborhood were invited, and the affair passed off most successfully. The greajb sale'of land within Hundreds, ■which was to have commenced here on Monday, has been postponed for a month. This.is owing to our new Superintendent, who wishes the farmers to get their crops in before the sale, and so be in a better position to buy. H.M.S. Brisk has been visited by large numbers of people this week, and all have expressed pleasure at the civility with which they have been shown over the vessel. A number of the crew have been knocking abut town,, amusing themselves in the usual extraordinary ways of the Jack Tar. With the exception of Wednesday, we have had remarkably beautiful weather all week, the fore end of the week being very warm, both night and day. The farmers have been taking every advantage of this in securing their crops. Business has ruled brisk, a good deal of orders being to hand in all branches. The Countess Russell has arrived from London,, with a large general cargo valued at London at L 76,700, and some passengers ; and the Indian, from New Yqrk r is also in port, with a supply of kerosene and other American articles of commerce, including painkiller, sarsaparilla, &c. A fair average Escort has been received in town this week, the amoiint being 68490z. Some 'of the quarfcz a -companies are beginning to send down their big caktsa, of gold pretty regular! v. .\vv **"
