THE Grey River Argus. SATURDAY, MARCH 9, 1867.

Hjs Hqnqr tlte Superintendent's present visit to Westjahd is of great importance to ""'tlxe wliple district, arid. -there is every reasou to expect that it^ will prove of great advantage, Although Ms Hoiaor ilias not been a stranger since his electiou, this is the lirst occasion on which he has had sufficient leisure to absent liimself froni^ the seat of government for ; any considerable- time. And we may be sure that a man of his practical turn of miud will not allow his visit to be a fruitless one. We have, already; an Ullustratiou of this in what his Honor has already done and is doing at Hokitika. He has shown that to. all treasonable applications he is willing to , lend a considerate ear, and so far as liis powei-s will allow him to grant them. Tlie willing manner in which he has acceeded to the requests of the ! inhabitants of the Waimea, Ross, and the other Hokitika gold fields should "afford strong encouragement to the \miiiers in the Crrej District. There -are several matters that come within the Executive functions of his Honor which urgently demand attention, espocially with regard to the goldfields. One of the chief of the.se is the ajjpointmeut of an additional Warden for this district. We should imagine that his Honor would hot hesitate at. once to accede to a formal request of -this kind, as he must have been made aware, in many ways of the extreme inadequacy of the ''present; official 5 supervision of this extfiusive district. The Provincial Council voted money last session for the salaries of two additional Wardens on the "West Goast, neither of whom has, we think, yet been appoiuted ; so that it would appear only to be necessary that the mi tiers should make application in order to get an extra Warden. Many other matters in connection with the diggings— -such as tnicks and roads to particular localities, will suggest themselves to those most iuterested, and means should be "adopted for making his Honor well acquainted with them. The up-river niiuera— that is those of the ''Arnold district, should not fail to make their wishes' known to his Honor regarding the proposed new; road to Maori Gully, for which the sum of £3500 has been voted by the Gmincil. Qf coui-se the decision of the Goyerhment will be a good deal regulated by the report of the surveyor, still we are sure his Honor will' endeavor to meet' the reasonable desires of the miners, most particularly concerned. The sum o p .£IO,OOO has also been voted for new roads and contingencies on th.c .WestCoast ; and the Grey district should f stiily' be entitled to at least a third share of this amount. There are- scores of channels in which a very great auioimt of good may, be. done by .a, wise expencliture of two or three thousand pounds, and it is for the residents in the various outlying districts to make their wants known.. His. Honor will most probably visit the various principal diggiugs in this district, and the miners will thus have a golden Opportunity- of laying their various requirements before him. But we would strongly advise that in any case the miners and traders of the two most important localities, Saltwater and Maori Gully, should * ibody their requests in the form of a nieiuorial which could be presented to his Honor either in Greymouth or when he visits them. We would recommend that there should be, as little delay as possible in the matter, if it is the wish or intention of the miners to make any representation of their Ayante pr;jgrievauces to the Superintendeiit.' .', : His Honor has come to Westland. purposely to become acquainted with the necessities of the district, : and: impossible to meet the -desires of the inhabitants; arid if the miners neglect this opportuniy they will be much to blame, and exceedingly } careiess about "their own interests. , : :
