;-r-By the Claud ■Hamilton we have Sydney papers to the 23rd, and by the lo Melbourne papers to the 15th. The following is a sumimary ;-of the news :— .;.,■. , ■ William Henry Scott, Charged with the murder of his wife, Annie Scott, at Sussex street, Sydney, has been tried and convicted. The unhappy culprit preserved throughout the trial the niostunmoved demeanour which had characterised, him .from the commencement, and only betrayed a slight emotion Avhen the jury returned into court at 9 o'clock, after the absence 'ni- an hour. Upon hearing the terrible verdict lie protested his entire innocence with solemn emphasis, but with a recklessness of manner that' painfully impressed all present. As he was removed from the court, the poor young woman whom he seems to have betrayed into a bigamous marriage, threw herself on the bench where she had /been sitting for some hours, and wept .bitterly. During the absence of the jury- -the excitement amongst' the crowd in the court became most intense, and as hia Honoii remarked, when he reappeared on the bench, the place had been more like a theatre tlian a Coiirt of Justice. I fc was 'with difficulty^ even r after that'observatiori, -that quiet could be preserved during the passing of the last dread sentence of the law. The polich have apprehended a man at Bathui-st. named Harvey, who is supposed to he one of the murderers of Mr Grenfell. A companion of his was arrested at Orange, early ;in the. week, and is known by the sobriquet of "Scotch Bill." The police, it is said, are in possession of information as to their being the men concerned in the murder. The mtd\ from Goul bourn to Sydney was robbed :by- three masked bushrangers, four miles from Goulburn. Dr Lang was one of the passengcis. V A fire occurredinßouike-street, Melbourne on tile 16th instant, by which three shops opposite the Hay market Theatre were destroyed. . ' : Patterson, Mayor of; D.^j'lesford, and two others, are to be-tried for arson at Melbourne. The report of gold being found near the Barrier Range is confirmed. A bottle, containing a piece of paper, o?i which was written "Ship Lord Raglan on fire, 13th March,' lS63 ? hit, 3(stleg. E., long. 2Sdeg — all lost, " was'picked up at Qucciipcliffe, on the 14th ultimo. The original pnperhas been sent; to the Commissioner of Police. ■ . Adelaide. Feb. 13. [• The barque Zanoni, wheat-laden, from i Port "Wakefield to England via Port ' Adelaide, was struck by. a cj^clone in the gulf on Monday afternoon, and foundered within seven iniriutegt ' All hands Mere saved with difficulty.
