' Small rushes appear to be the order of the day on the .North Beach, the number of claims on which is increasing almost daily. In a few instances the rushes have not proved successful, but in the majority of cases the claims have all turned out well-— some of them even more than well. On the terraces the same activity prevails, and the yield of gold keeps, up quite equal to former returns. An attempt is about to be made to bring water to the summit of the terrace by means of a race from the head of Coal Creek ; but it is feared the undertaking is of too great a magnitude for the resources of those who have engaged an it. The opinion is.expressedby some of the most intelligent miners that could sufficient water be brought on the terraces the yield of gold woukj. be doubled. . * A correspondent writing from Nelson's Creek under date May 9, reports as follows : — As this creek is taking up a • considerable portion of public attention, I think it may not be uninteresting to your readers to give you a short faithful 'account of the present state of this immediate district. You have before observed that the main creek has been taken up, and it is with the fullest confidence I inform you. that two of the claims only have bottomed, and both of these are payable. I may as well give you an account of the taking up of this main creek. About five weeks since Richard Owen and party applied for and obtained an extended claim. This is cj-lled the No.. 1 party, because they were not only the first to undertake the speculation, but selected their ground at the mouth of this main branch creek, consequently they are the first party in the creek. They have turned the- creek, and are now sinking a large paddock with the help of a Californian pump. There are seven shareholders, and they have several wages men employed, they are in good spirits aufi. feel ■confident of success. The next party, £o. 2, have bottomed, and worked two payable paddocks. I saw them sell a nice parcel of 13 ozs. of gold this morning. Another party (Barry'y) have bottomed higher up, and I believe, have found their ground payable, but not good as No. 2 party. • Several other parties will bottom in a day or two, when I hope to be able to "give you a favorable account of them ; the creek is taken up for about four miles. Another pai^y (the Rough and Ready) have to-day aj>plied for an extended claim in the other main branch. This part of the creek has never been prospected, but the Rough and Readies are men who will get the gold out if it is there ; it will be very heavy work. The terraces here are being taken up, and numerous are the applications for water-races. There is Austrian George and party, the reiWHruecl Jimmy Farrell, and others who have obtained water rights for working these terraces, .some of which prospected very well. Most of the available water is now taken up. The ground at the head of the creek, six miles up, has been partly abandoned, although two months since great things were expected from that quarter, and some of the claimholderswent to great expense in sawing timber and putting in box tail-races, which did not pay fox the Labor. Altogether, as I said before, thore is no room for a large addition to the population ; but things have never' looked better since the day when poor Nelsons nearly lost his ears' for reporting his discovery here. The Hokitika correspondent of the Canterbury Press writes-:—" Mrs Kinder having gained an acquaintance with the duties of a barmaid, has, through her father, taken a public house, .and. called it the Masonic hotel. The craft, indignant at such a liberty being taken with the square and' compas?, waited upon Mr S,a'le to ask him not to allow it. It does not m^ter much, I fancy, as the Sydney papers per | jolonist, inform us that Bertrand is to have ;ai new trial, and as Mrs Kinder's presence -witt be required, we shall' in all pro. bability loj|>, this notorious 'memlj?r cf our • conxmunitjsj? ff.
