LICENSING COMMITTEES.

CHRISTCHURCH EAST The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christchurch East was held to-day at noon on the Orange Hall, Worcester street. Present—Mr C. A. Pritchard (chairman), Messrs John Anderson, W. H. Lane, and J. P. Jameson. Mr Loughrey applied for confirmation of a transfer of license from Patrick Burke to James Comer in respect of the Victoria Hotel, Colombo street.

Mr Bruges made a similar application in respect of a transfer of the license of the Albion Hotel from Walter Daniels to John Barlow.

Mr Loughrey also applied for a confirmation of transfer from Robert Wallace to John Olphert in respect of the Criterion Hotel.

Mr Bruges applied on behalf of Patrick Gillin, of the Garrick Hotel, for an extension of the license from 10 until 11 o’clock. A similar application was refused at the previous meeting, but the house had since been very well conducted, and probably the Commissioners would consider that the licensee had already been sufficiently punished. gsMr Malet applied, under the 99th section of the Act, that the temporary permit which had been granted to Mrs Beatty to carry on the license of the Palace Hotel, previously held by her late husband, might be continued until probate w r as granted. These were all the applications, and the Committee after a short deliberation disposed of them as follow's : —The three applications for transfers were granted, and also the application in respect of the Palace Hotel. With regard to the Garrick Hotel, the Committee declined to grant the extension applied for. An application from Charles Bishop, A.D., Pioneer Lodge of Druids, for permission to hold a social gathering in the lodge room at the Terminus Hotel on Friday evening next until half-past 11 o’clock p.m. was granted. This was all the business and the Committee adjourned.

J. Hodgson, Crown Hotel, applied for an extension of hours from ten to eleven o’clock.

Similar applications were made by the other hotelkeepers. Sergeant Morice said ho was not opposed to the applications. All applications were granted, Messrs Reed, Forbes, and Smith voting in favor of it, Messrs Chalmers and Webb against.

HEAD OF BAY. The quarterly meeting was held on Monday at the Road Board Office, Head of Bay. Present—Messrs John Gobble (chairman), Bradley, W. D. Gebbie, 11. Urquhart.

Sergeant Morice was present, and his report upon the three hotels that comprise the business of the Committee in this district was considered.

The meeting adjourned to the Bth of January, by which time Mr Milburn’s new hotel at Governor’s Bay will be finished.

* How is the soil of Kansas ? ’ asked one of the group, as the traveller paused. ‘ Richest in the world, sir,’ was the reply. ‘ I know a New York State man who went to Kansas seven years ago with only 15dol. in cash, and he is now worth 2000d01.’ ‘ Whew ! What did he raise principally ?’ • I believe it was a cheque, sir ; but they couldn’t exactly prove it on him.’
