DEAR SIR,—We, the undersigned Burgesses of the City of Christchurch, recognising the able manner in which yon have discharged the important duties upon you, both, in yonr official and social capacity as Chief Magistrate of this city, hereby respectfully request yon to allow yourself to be nominated for the position of Mayor far the ongoing twelve months. The resnl'g of the.'past year nnder yonr Municipal rule have been so entirely satisfactory astoinspire ns with full confidence, that in yonr hands onr interests will be zealously and jndicionsly conserved. We are, dear, sir, Yonra very faithfully, Signed by GEO. GOULD JN ». ANDEBiON J, P. JAMESON And 305 other citizens signing the above requisition. REPLY. To Messrs Gould, Anderson, Jameson, and 305 other Citizens Signing the above Requisition. GENTLEMEN,— I thank you for the high compliment you have paid me in presenting the requisition. I deeply feel _ the great honor at receiving so numerously a signed requisition from my fellow citizens, asking me to allow myself to be again nominated for the Office of Mayor of this GL-y. It ia a great gratification to myself to know that the Citizens appreciate the way in which I have discharged the duties of my Ofiice dnring the past year, and I brg moat sincerely to thank them for their expressions. As the Office of Mayor is the only honor the Citizens have to bestow upon these gentlemen who have given their services as Councillors, and us I h»ve alwi ji held the opinion that to make the reward to tho< e who aspire to that honor as open as possible, the position should not be filled by the same person more than once under ordinary circumstances. Holding these views, and my not having enjoyed as good health as I should wish, I naturally intended to retire at the expiration of my term of office. But as it appears the general desire of my fellow-citizens, as well as that of the Council, that I should occupy ihe position another year, also feeling that 1 possess their confidence, Z consider it my duty to |put aside my private arrangements, and accede to the request in the requisition. if elected it shall be my earnest endeavors to protect to the best of my ability the interests of the city, and to uphold the dignity of the office. I am, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, 3230 J. G. RUDDEHKLAU.
