COURSING.

THE WATERLOO CUP, [PEESB ASSOCIATION TBLEOBAM.] TAPANUI, Juno 21. The morning broke cloudy but fine, and with no wind. Proceedings were commenced on the Brooksdalo estate, leased by Mr Kolty. The officials and a small gathering wore on tho ground shortly after nine o’clock, but, owing to tbe absence of some of tho beaters, it was 9.40 a.m. before the first brace of dogs were in the slips. Banshee was tho favorite, with 6 to 4 on her. Four or five hares were started, but got away before the dogs sighted. At last the dogs were slipped to a long sight. Rhododendron was the first from the slips, but Banshee passed him in ten yarde. Both dogs then got unsighted in the tussocks. Peri and Eurrier were then slipped to a slow hare. The betting was 2 to 1 on Pori. Eurrier was the first away from tho slips, but Pori soon passed and had things to herself, thus landing the first course for Mr Surmiin. Nine hares were started from a gully for one course. Betting, 7 to 4 on Homily. Luna led up till the dogs disappeared behind tho hill and the white flag announced the overthrow of the favorite. There was a beautiful course between Banshee and Rhododendron. Tho dog led up and turned; Banshee got in at last, but too late to wipe out tho dog’s score. Cineraria and Lady Ellen ran an undecided course, both killir g after a short course. Phlox Drummondi and Eclipse ran a very long course. The dog, who was the favorite at 10 to 6, got in first, but Eclipse gave Mm the go-bye, and an in and out course ended in a kill and win for tho black dog. Five to 1 was bet on Glonlora against Sybil. Glcnlora scored three points, when Sybil gave her tho go-bye and killed, thus securing tho victory. Cineraria led up, and Lady Ellen running rather cunning allowed Mr McDonald’s bitch to win easily. The betting was 5 to 4 on her. The Queen of tho Seas was the favorite at 6 to 4, but Seafieid led her by a little all the way, and beat her almost pointless. Tho Duchcfs of Connaught, who was backed at 6 to 4, led up and wrenched close to tho spectators than went off on a long course, scoring rapidly. Sleightof Hard rever got near her. Miranda and Master Walter ran a long course, with hardly any work in it. The bitch led all tho way, and boat her opponent pointless. The betting waa 5 to 1 on Miranda. The course between Skiddaw Lass and Hopfactor was a great upset. The betting wbs 2 to 1 on tho bitch. Tho dog got first to tho hare, and scored about four points, then the bitch dispossessed, and scored twice, but the dog coming again with determination, won a splendid course in full sight. Lancashire Lass and Aster ran an undecided course, to the surprise of many, The former was a hot favorite, and was fancied straight

A out. Kathleen was backed at 2to 1‘ again d Talbot. They alst; ran an undecided coors The oouree between Miss Lucy and Olio w t one of the contests ever seen in Ne e Zsaland. Affrong hare was put up, and - tl f dogs worked it in fn-11 sight of the spectato: c for several minutes. Miss Lucy was Si favorite at 3to 1. Both dogs wrenched on turned repeatedly. Miss Lucy seemed to lac pace, and was eventually put out by few points. Lancashire Lass and Aste wore then put in the slips to run oJ their undecided course. The Lass led out o the slips and scored finely at first. Aste , came away after the first gully had beei passed, but the Lass gave her the go-by, anc i after an immerse amount of work had beei ■ put in the red flag went up for the Lass, wh( was a strong favorite. Kathleen made al the work, and beat Talbot easily. A seven course between Btrongbow and Parmesan wai a long, straight run, with little work in it, The bitch was in possession most of the time, and won comfortably. Spring was backed at sto 4 against Legerdemain. The latter led slightly, and took two turns, then the white dog got in and did all the work till the end of a short course. Magician was a slightly better favorite than Britons Still. The former scored once, and then the dog took possession, and did sufficient work to win easily. Van Dieman and Dosdemona ran a no course. Jeanette was backed at 6 to 4 6o beat Rose of Denmark. There was a splendid race in the rnn up, Jeanette getting slightly the best at the finish. As they neared the hare the black bitch stumbled, and let Rose of Denmark in. Hero a collie dog joined in the hunt, and kept with the hounds. Jeanette soon dispossessed her opponent, and, turning with smartness, won with a little to spare. Champagne Charlie beat Mick. The first work was done out of sight, but as the dogs emerged from the gully it was Been that Charlie had more pace than the Irishman, and the latter was plainly beaten, though not disgraced. The run off between Deademona and Van Dioman was exciting. The dog was first in, and scored about two points ; but the bitch then gave him t ! o go-by, and some in and cut work ensued. Eventually Van Dietnan got possession, and won comfortably. There wss a splendid course between Lancashire Lad and Bonnie Scotland. The latter was the favorite at 2to 1. The Lad had got momentarily unsighted, and allowed his opponent to get a long lead ; the huro then favored Lancashire Lad, and ho got a few points to the good, and an exciting run ensued. Both dogs worked well, but towards the finish Bonnie Scotland had it all his own way, and won by three or four points. Harmony disappointed a good many by allowing Progress to beat him rather easily in a short course. The favorite only scored one or two points, while Progress worked smartly, and ran up a large number Ito his credit. The betting was 2to 1 on Harmony. Don Carlos led Le Loup slightly from the slips ; then the latter got in, and next the Don scored a go-bye. Almost immediately, however, he stumbled and let Le Loup in. Don Carlos coming again, a rattling give-and-take course resulted in the flag going up for Den Carlos. This caused some surprise, as it was generally thought that the points scored were almost equal, and as all the work was done in sight of the spectators, they could form a very fair opinion. Bide-a-Weo led Scamp from the slip ; Scamp then gars her the go-bye, but crossing the first terrace, and rising the hill, Bido-a-Wee again got in, hut fell. Scamp then took charge, and held it till the end of a rattling course. Bido-a-Weo was backed at 2to 1. This concluded the first round. The day’s sport was grand, hares being plentiful and strong. The following were the results : Waterloo Cup ; for all aged dogs at £l2 10s each. Forty-six entries. Winner, £210; runner np, .£B2 10s; one dog, £22 10s; throe dogs at £l2 10s each ; six dogs at £8 each ; eleven dogs at £4 each. Thomson’s Don Carlos beat Mr Roper’s Le Loup Mr Duthie’a Scamp beat Mr Cameron’s Bide-a-Wee. The second round of the Cup was commenced at 2.20 p.m. Rhododendron and Peri ran a short course in which all the work was done out of sight. The former dog, on whom adds of 6to 5 were laid, won it. It was generally thought that Luna would beat Cineraria, odds of 5 to 4 being laid on the former. Luna did all the work for the first 300 yards, then Cineraria got in and scored. Luna falling gave Cineraria a still further advantage, but soon afterwards Luna scored a go-bye and held possession to the end of a long course. Pour to one had to be laid on GUenlora before any one could be found to back Phlox against her. The result showed that the favorite was no moral after all. The dogs wore slipped to a very strong hare, which dodged wonderfully. Q-lonlora had a slight advantage in the run up, but on approaching the hare both scored freely. The hare taking refuge in a swamp, Phlox got unsighted, but GUenlora continued the hunt and won with a few points to spare. Seafield and Duchess of Connaught were slipped to a hare which led them a merry dance for a short course, during which the work was for the most part done out of view, but Seafield had advantage all through. The Duchess, on whom odds were laid, got in at the finish, but too late to balance accounts. Miranda boat Hopfactor on every point in a short course. The dog seemed to run artfully, and never tried at all. Three to 1 was freely offered against Kathleen in her course with Lancashire Lass. The result was a regular boil over. The dogs were sent away to a long slip. Kathleen led up and showed a rare turn of speed. Lancashire Less lying buck a while, but recovering gave Kathleen the go bye. A regular good course ensued, but Kathleen always had the best of it, and won easily. Clio and Parmesan were almost equally fancied. The latter led up, but the hare favoring Olio she scored a few points. In a give and take run up to a fence Parmesan got through first and ended a severe course. Spring was backed at 6to 4 against Britons Still. They ran a very short course, in which however the latter put in enough work to be declared winner. Jeanette was considered certain to boat Van Dieman, and the result showed that this calculation was correct. The course was short, sharp, decisive, Jeanette winning on every point with something to spare. Champagne Charlie and Bonnie Scotland ran a no-couvse. When next slipped the latter led a short distance, but the black dog scored a go-bye, and wound up a short course with a kill. Don Carlos and Progress had a lively trial while it lasted. The former was the favorite at 2 to 1, and justified the confidence of his backers by winning tolerably easy. Ho had a slight advantage in the run up, and when they were both in the tow did moat of the work, winding up with a kill. Scamp then ran his bye, and brought the day’s work to a close at 4 45. SECOND ROUND. Rhododendron beat Peri Luna beat Cineraria Glenlora beat Phlox Drummondi Heafield boat Duchess of Connaught Miranda beat Hopfactor Kathleen boat Lancashire Lass Parmesan beat Clio Britons Still beat Spring Jeanette beat Van Dieman Champagne Charlie beat Bonnie Scotland Don Carlos boat Progress Scamp ran a bye. The weather all day was simply perfection, and hares wore numerous and strong. All agree that it was the most successful day’s coursing ever held in the colony. Thirty-five courses were decided, which is by far the largest number ever run in one day in New Zealand. What little wagering there is indicates that Don Carlos is the favorite for the Cup, the best offer against him being 5 to 1.
