CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, Apbii. 30. fßofore B. Westonra, and J. E. Parker, Esqs , J P.’s.] Drunkenness —Wm. Chapman, for this offence, was fined 10s. John McElroy was charged with being drunk on the previous night. The evidence went to show that he was a habitual drunkard within the meaning of the Act. He had been convicted five times within twj months. Ho was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. Vagrancy. —John Whitbey, a colored man, was brought up, and on being told that he was charged with having no lawful visible means of support, said “Same as the last,” alluding to his plea on the occasion of his last conviction for a similar offence. The police and a witness spoke to his inveterate idleness. Ho had been often convicted for vagrancy, and has been hanging about the streets day and night ever since his last liberation from gaol. He had been properly examined as to his canity, but it was found that though weakminded ho was not a fit subject for Suunj aide. He was sent to gaol for six months, to be kept at hard labor.
