THE OPERA
The expectations of yesterday were fully realised in the excellent house of last night, when “ Maritana ” —one of the necessities of an opera season—was given. As to the merits or demerits of the wort in question we refrain from giving any opinion, but pass on to remark that, as given last evening, it could not be considered an unqualified success. Madame He'-see, who sustained the title role , commended herself to the audience by her shill in stage effect, and her singing in “ Bella Gitana,” in the duetts with Don Jose 11 Of fairy wand," and with Xazarillo “ Sainted Mother," the latter of which, strange to say, was not redemanded, although ore cf her beat efforts. Miss Lambert ae Lanrillo, in “Alas! those chimes” secured an encore, the effect of which wag to leave great doubt as to the good judgment displayed by the audience. Of Mr Beaumont as Don Caesar, it is hardly necessary to say that although his acting was good he was evidently suffering from indisposition, otherwise it is impossible to account for hia total failure on G. But, nevertheless, he struggled manfully through it, and was decidedly successful in “ No, my courage now regaining.” Mr Templeton as Don Jose received a fair share of applause, and Mr Howell as the Marquis was irresistible in his quaint and humorous representation of that character. It may be observed that there is no good reason for interpolations in the text, or for expressions which only tend to make the opera more objectionable than necessary. “Faust” is set down for to-night, and judging from the number of seats that have been already applied for, a crowded house is a matter of certainty.
