NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

A general meeting of members of the New Zealand R.fle Association and those interested therein was held on Wednesday, at Cooksou's Commercial Hotel.

Major Lean occupied the chair, and said that the first meeting of the association had been a most pronounced success, and it would be a pity if Canterbury did not contribute to the success of the second meeting at least in in the moderate degree the had to that of the first. Several gentlemen had asked him questions regarding the association, and he hud therefore asked the secretary to call the present meeting. He nrght say, so far as he was personally concerned, that the local association should be affiliated in some degree to the general association. As the second meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association took place in March, there was no time to be lost, and he hoped to see that Canterbury would be able to send a subscription to the general funds. Last year they had done so, and he hoped to see more sent this time. They had before them a very liberal programme of prizes, which would suit everyono. The meeting that evening was not confined to members of the association, but was rather a meeting of those interested in it with a view to exoiting interest locally. He desired to point out that every £1 collected and aubscribed by them doubled, because the Government give £1 for every £l subscribed.

Mr J. Fox aßked whether the various companies of Volunteers would contribu'e the same amount as last year. Major Lean said that this was just what was wanted to be ascertained. He desired to point out that by fubscribing a certain number of members of companies weie eatitled to be members at the rate of one for every 15s subscribed. They also got a bronze medal.

Mr Strange inquired why they had not got ouo for last year. Major Lean said that he believed the medal was not yet struck. Messrs Strange and Appleby stated that they could promise £5 5s each on behalf of their respective companies, viz , Artillery and Engineers.

The expanse of travelling was stated as being £4 to and from Nelson by steamer, and about 43 61 per diem rations whilst in camp. It was also pointed out that competitors must appear in tho uniform of the corps to which they belonged. The Chairman, Messrs Fox, R. P. Hill, D. Craig, Wolfe, Deacon, and Warner are appointed as a committee to solicit subscriptions in aid of the meeting.

After the transaction of some routine business the meeting adjourned.
