OTAGO r. CANTERBURY, [By Tblegbaph] DUNEDIN, January 12. The result of the match as played up to lunch time yesterday was given in our yesterday’s issue. The following is a detailed account of the whole of yesterday’s play and the score and bowling analysis in full:— The innings of Otago was resumed, Crawshaw and Oollinson, the two not-outs of Saturday, resuming their places at the wickets. The score then stood at 70 for six wickets. The Canterbury men took the same position in the field as they occupied on Saturday. Frith commenced by bowling from the east end, and his third ball Crawshaw got away to square leg for a single. Turner bowled from the other end, and sent down a maiden to start with. Collinson drew the first of Frith’s next for a single, and put Turner to square leg for another. This he followed up with another single off Frith, and next opened his shoulders to one from Turner, driving him finely to the off for 4. Crawshaw meanwhile was playing steadily, though not scoring. After a maiden from Frith Oollinson out Turner prettily through the slips for 3, and 80 was put up on the board amidst a round of cheers. Oollinson then put Frith past point, for which a risky single was run. Ashby now took the ball from Turner at the west end, and after he had bowled a wide with his third ball, Oollinson drove him to the fence at square-leg for 3, The same batsman got Frith flukily to leg for 2 and snicked him for 1, next getting Ashby nicely to long-leg for another single, and 90 went up. Another wide spoiled Ashby’s next over, but a separation was effected by Frith _ in the following over, Oollinson lifting him into Sheath’s hands at long on. 7-18—91. The retiring batsman had played a short but merry innings, characterised by steady defence, combined with a good deal of his old hitting powers. His contribution came at an opportune time, serving to instil a little confidence into the Otago men, who were rather disheartened at the result of Saturday’s pla*. Haskell filled the vacancy, and was soon at work, getting a 1 and 2 off Ashby. Crawshaw, after having been thirty five minutes at the wickets for one run, cut Ashby nicely for 2, and followed this up with a single to leg. Ashby, who had not been a success, took him self off in favour of Fuller, who commenced with a maiden. Haskell played the first of his next forward for a single. Frith, meanwhile, had been bowling maiden after maiden, and in his next over he gained another wicket by

getting Haskell leg before. 8—4—99. Cooke next went in, but almost immediately lost the company of Orawehaw, who was splendidly caught at short square-leg by Ashby, oil Fuller. 9—4—99. Crawshaw had played a very painstaking innings, having occupied three-quarters of an hour in putting together his score of four tuns. A maiden from Frith was followed by McLennan getting the last ball of Fuller’s next to leg for' a single, and 100 went up, amidst great cheering. He then drove Frith to the on for 1, the ball being sadly muffed by Fuller, and next out Fuller past point for 2, and got the same bowler nicely to leg for another couple. Both men were batting well, but displayed some want of steadiness between the wickets. There were now some hopes of a follow on being averted, but in Frith's next over, this was dispelled, that bowler sending an undeniable one into Cooke's wickets. 10—0 —105. McLennan thus carried his bat out for 6, obtained in very good style. After an adjournment for lunch, Otago commenced their second innings_ at 215 p.m., Cargill and Crawshaw going first to the wickets. Frith resumed bowling at his own end, and his first oyer yielded 2 runs, each batsman getting him away for a single. Fuller again went on at the west end, and his third ball was put to leg by Cargill for 1. The same batsman cut Frith for 1, and a maiden from each end succeeded. Cargill then cut Fuller finely for 2, and in the same over got him nicely to leg for another 2. Frith bowled a maiden and Fuller followed suit. Cargill hit. Frith to leg for 1, and Crawshaw out him for another. The latter then lifted Fuller to the on for one, and cut Frith similarly, non skying Fuller to the on for still another 1 After a maiden from each, Cargill dropped on to one from Fuller, and sent it to the fence at long leg. Ho then sent Frith to square leg for 1, but after Crawshaw had added another X, Cargill succumbed to one from Frith. 19—1 —12. The retiring batsman had played a pretty ond effective innings. Conway took his place, and Crawshaw immediately drove Fuller right along the carpet for 3. Unfortunately in the next over a misunderstanding in running for a cut by Crawshaw off Frith resulted in Orawshaw's being run out, 222 —9. Clark followed, and Conway negotiated the rest of the over successfully. Fuller delivered a maiden, Frith following with the same. Clark made a single off Fuller, and then lifted Frith well to leg, whore Baker took it capitally. 23—3 — 1. Paramor, who supplied the vacancy, was received with cheers from the crowd as

i an acknowledgment of his Saturday’s play. He played a maiden over from Fuller. Conway now broke the ice by snicking Frith for a single. Paramor also put the same bowler away for a single. Fuller bowled a maiden. Conway drove Frith for a couple, following it following it up with another brace. A single to Paramor off Fuller produced 30 on the telegraph board. Then Conway obtained a single, and Paramor played the ball sharp back to Fuller, who was not to be denied. 31 4—2. Oollinson was the incomer, and it now became a ques'ion as to whether a one innings defeat would be saved. Collinson put Fuller away for 1, and Frith was again credited with a maiden. From each end maidens followed, the last ball of Frith’s over dismissing Oollinson, who was smartly caught in the slips by Fuller. 32—5 —1. Spring joined Conway, who contributed a single to the score. Spring also got the same bowler away with a similar result. He then got on to one from Frith, lifting him to the fenoe for 3, and cut Fuller to the scorer’s tent for a like number. This brought 40 up. Maidens followed from both ends, till Spring lifted Frith to the long-on for 2. Sheath tried to catch tho ball, but the wind carried it beyond his reach. The batsman then drove the bowler along the carpet for 2. Conway now got a single oft Fuller, and then cut Frith for 3. Spring drove the latter for a brace, causing 50 to appear. In Fuller’s next over he was dismissed with a bailer. 51—6 —13. Spring played very freely during the short time he was atthewickels. Vernon was tho next man. Conway now gave J. Fowler an easy chance, which this generally excellent field failed to take. Vernon, after contributing 2, was bowled by Frith, who was in deadly form. 54—7 —2. Haskell joined Conway, who drove Fuller for 2, and in his next over out him for a single. He then stepped out to one to Frith and getting hold of it, drove it to the fenoe for 3. This brought the total up to 60. Singles were added by each batsman, Conway, who seemed determined that Canterbury should have to go to the wickets again, was loudly cheered on driving Fuller to tho west end of the ground for 4. He then got Frith to leg for 2, bringing 70 up. Ashby now went on at Frith’s end, bowling with the wind. His first ball Conway out for 3. Buns continued to come freely, but at 82 Ashby found his way into Haskell’s wickest —B —2 a single oil each bowler. He then drew Ashby for a single, and the succeeding ball Conway snicked past the wicket keeper, and the pace which Ashby had put on enabled 4 to be run for it. This was saluted with great cheering, as it caused 80 to be put up, and a one innings defeat was thus averted. After a maiden from each end Conway scored a single oil Fuller, and the last ball of the same over a full pitch he drove finely to longon for 4. Fuller was now taken off in favor of Turner, the third ball of whose opening over Conway drove to leg for 1. The Australian player’s time had now come, however, for in Ashby’s next he skied one to short-leg, which Alpe, running from long-stop, secured easily. 9 —49 —97. Conway’s innings was a fine free hitting one, and he received quite an ovation on returning to the pavilion. McLennan was again last man, but he never got a chance of making a score, for Cooke, after making a couple more singles, was clean bowled by Ashby. 10—4—99. Canterbury requiring fifteen to win, sent in Alpe and J. Fowler. The former was bowled by McLennau’s first ball. Ashby joined Fowler, and made the required runs, but each gave a decided chance, but both wore refused oy Spring and McLennan respectively. The following are the full scores :
