By the firo at Caversham last night the South British Company loses £l5O, and the Colonial £IOO. Mistaken Identify. Mr Finn, barrister, of Inveroargill, on behalf of the actor Tyrroll, who was arrested hero on the authority of the Christ church police, has served a notice on Detective Bain, claiming £IOOO damages for falae arrest. Mr. Walters and the Mayor Elect. Mr Walters' action in endeavoring to oußt the Mayor elect, is generally condemned. Cr. Fish was merely a subcontractor at the new Town Hall. At the inquest held this afternoon on the body of the man Boyle, killed by a fall of earth at Point Britomart reclamation works yesterday, a verdict of "accidental death " was returned.

WELLINGTON.December 4. Bees v. Cooper. In banco, in the case of W. L. Bees, solicitor, v Cooper, an action to recover £IOOO damages from defendant, who resides at Poverty Bay, for alleged libel and conspiracy arising out of an abortive prosecution brought against plaintiff by defendant in connection with a certain cheque, a demurrer raised by Mr Travers was overruled, and the case wll go to trial. White v. South British Insurance Co. In the Court of Appeal, before the Chief Justice and Mr Justice) Bichmond, the case White (appellant) v. South British Insurance Company (respondent) was heard. White in 1876 took out a policy, which was in full force when tho house was burned down. Tho company repudiate the policy on the grounds of violation of one of the conditions, which was to the effect that the amount would not be recoverable in the event of the property being subsequently insured in any office without notice being given, so that they might have an opportunity of terminating their insurance if they wished. White sued the South British Company at Nelson for the amount, lees £SO, so as to give tho Court jurisdiction. It was proved by defendants that two other policies in another office, to the amount of £l5O in all, had been tukon out by plaintiff on tho same property. The Court gave judgment for defendants. White appealed against this on the ground that such a regulation of the company as that referred to was uncalled for and unnecessary, and that £7OO injured was not above the value of the property. Fish, jun., be ousted from tho position of Mayor of Duredin, to which he was elected on the 26th ult., on the ground that he was nt the time interested in a contract under the Corporation. Chamber of Commerce. A meeting of tie Chamber of Commerce was held today to elect a representative on tho Harbor Board vice Mr Tewsley resigned. Mr J. A. Walcott, of Messrs Bright Bros, and Co., was chosen unanimously. The New Zealand Alliance. A meeting of the New Zealand Alliance was held this evening, in the Temperance Hall. INYEROARGILL, December 4. The annual show, under the auspices of the Mataura Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was held to-day, and was a great success. The entries were very numerous. Committal. Donald McEay was to-day committed for trial for counselling and procuring Duncan Cameron to set fire to a building at Mataura, that wbb his (Mc'Eay's) propeity. Ba 1 was refused, Raising the WindThe advisability of raising a £20,000 loan for town improvements was mooted at the Town Council to-night, but further consideration of the proposal was postponed for a week.
