MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

CITY OF OHRISTCHURCH. Tho polling for the three contested wards of the city took place yesterday. There was little or no excitement, the general election which had preceded it eridently taking all thiß element out of the municipal contest. A novel item in the election was the record by a number of female ratepayer!! of their votes, ' for the first time in Christchurch. The results of tho polling are as follows : The polling for tho North-East Ward was at the Orange Hall, Worcester street, and resulted as follows : Book wood Bishop ... 438 W. S. King 316 M. M. Wyott 306 Henry Thomson ... ... 254 The South-West Ward polling was at St. Michael's Church, Durham street, tho result being— E. W. England ... ... 366 C. B. Taylor 274 Wm. Vincont 272 B. Binstead 130 The South-east ward polling took place at St. John's schoolroom, and the result was as follows : A. Ayers ■•• G 69 C. P. Hulbort 521 A. Cuff 493 S. Manning ..» The Council therefore as now constituted will be Crs. Bishop, King, Wyatt, Ayers, Hulbert, Cuff, Cherrill, Gapes, Lambert, England, Taylor, and Vincent. The official declaration was made by Mr G. L. Lee, the Returning Officer, at the Council Chamber at noon to-day, there being little interest taken in the event. Thero were about seventy persons present. Mr Ayers briefly returned thanks on behalf of himself and the members of his ward, whs> were absent through pressure of business.

Chas. Hall 18S Wm. Langdown ... ... 176 Francis Innes ... ... 155 John Webber 144 Wm. Barrar George ... 11l Informal votes 4 The firßt three candidates, viz.—Messrs James Nicholl, Fred. Chas. Hall, and Wm. langdown—were therefore elected, and the official declaration of the poll will take place to-morrow at noon. Each of the successful candidates returned thanks to the electors for electing him to the Council. The Mayor also came forward, and made a few remarks, chiefly in reference to his approaching retirement from office. Itgave him great gratification to be able to testify to the good feeling and harmony that had prevailed Si the conduct of the Council, especially as hia connection with that body would in a ehort time cease, and would not, probably, be again renewed. Three cheers were then given for the Mayor, and the proceedings terminated. LYTTELTON. Three vacancies in the Council were yesterday filled by the re-election of one of the candidates—Mr Weyburn, and the return of two new ones—Messrs Smith and Grubb. Mr Grubb Berved in the Oeuncil some years ago. Six candidates were in the field, and though there was little excitement over the contest, the polling was good. About 100 electors assembled at the Council chamber at 7 p.m., to learn the result, which was declared by the returning officer as follows : Smith 226 Weyburn 223 Grubb 175 Webb, B.R 141 Holmes 89 Higgs 38 Messrs Smith and Grubb were present, and thanked the burgesaes for the honsr conferred, and Mr S. R. Webb thanked those who had voted for him. KAIAPOI. The election of three councillors to fill the vacancies in the Kaiapoi Council took place on Thursday. Little interest was taken in the proceedings, owing, no doubt, to a surfeit of election contests. The numbers polled were, for— J.W.Ellen 86 R. Moore 83 G. W. Wearing 76 Jos. Stanton 73 W. Burnip 48 The Returning Officer declared Messrs Ellen, Moore, and Wearing duly elected as Councillors. The successful and unsuccessful candidates addressed those present, and the proceedings terminated. RANGIORA. The polling on Thursday for the election of Councillors to fill the vacancies in the Rangiora municipal body resulted as follows : J. J. Robinson 117 A. Ivory 100 S. Stephens 90 B.Ellis 78 J.Lilly 78 W. White 43 R. H. Hanna 30 ASHBURTON. Messrs Parkin, Campbell and Friedlander, the former members, were elected for the Borough Council on Thursday. Messrs Fowler and Sando, the new aspirants, were defeated by a considerable majority.
