Auckland, April 21 The Thames Pumping Association and Thames County Council met on Thursday to consider a proposal that the Pumping Association should reimburse the County Council on condition that the Council hand over security to the Association.

The wind last week averaged 330 miles a day. The total number of inmates of the Hospital is eighty-six. The Board of Governors of the Grammar School to-day passed the following resolution after the reporters withdrew: —“That a communication be made to the Improvement Commissioners to the effect tfiat, on condition of their resigning proceedings under their writ of sclrc facias, the Governors will send the grant of two a'res to the proper authority in Wellington for correction, if the description shall, in the opinion of such authority, be f ound to be wrong ’

Both evening papers comment upon the Schwartz case as a great miscarriage of justice. The poll on the proposal to raise a loan of .£IOO,OOO will be taken to-morrow.

In the Supreme Court counsel in a case asked for an adjournment for two hours in consequence of a material witness not being present. His Honor refused, and the case was deferred till next day, the counsel applying for the adjournment paying the costs of the Court for the day. A large catch of fish was brought in to-day from Port Underwood by the deep sea fishing smack, Lena. A meeting is to be held at Masterton to consider the advisability of bringing the Babbit Act into force in that district. Some stations are almost rained by the pest.

The Resident Magistrate has determined not to allow co>t of counsel unless in cases where the amount sued for is over .£5.

Many cases of typhoid fever spread about the town. Some have occurred in localities not affected by the bad drainage or unhealthiness. It is due to infected milk, and one of the dairymen, in con-equence of sickness about the place, has ceased to retail his milk.

A formal complaint was made to the Resident Magistrate that an officer of the Court had caused a bailiff to leave premises and property of which he had been placed in charge by the applicant. The Magistrate said if the applicant sustained any loss through the action of an officer of the Court, he could give him a month’s notice and sue him for the loss. He recommended that course to the applicant, who said he would act on the advice.

Wm. Lancaster, charged with wife desertion, was remanded.

A meeting of the ratepayers of Thorndon tonight decided to form a committee to-morrow morning for the purpose of urging tho ratepayers to vote against tho £IOO,OOO loan. Crcswick made his first appearance to-night at the Imperial Opera House, and notwithstanding that tho night was wet and cold there was a full house.

Dunedin, April 21. The Dunedin School Committee to-night passed the following resolution: —“ That the Dunedin School Committee cordially approve of the efforts of the Bible in Schools Association to have the Bible re-introduced into our public schools, and will gladly co-operate with them in their efforts to attain sodcsirable an end.”

At a meeting presided over by the Mayor oday to consider what steps should bo laken to give his Excellency a proper reception, the following resolution was carried : —“ That the Governor alight from the train at Pelichet Bay, and that he be there met by the Mayor and corporation, and driven to Garrison Hall to receive addresses, the volunteers and public bodies to be invited to take part in the procession.” His Excellency will bo entertained at a citizens’ banquet on Tuesday week, and will attend the Choral Society’s concert on the following Thursday. Two business establishments in Eattray street were broken into last night. With the exception of stealing six shillings worth of coppers, the burglars limited tncir depredations to sampling delicacies ot various kinds. Mr Vincent Pyko addressed his constituents at Clyde on Saturday evening, on the political problems of the day. He was thanked for his address, and a vote of confidence in him as the representative of the district was carried by acclamation.

Invercargill, April 21

At the District < ourt this morning, John Wilson was found guilty on two charges of obtaining money by false pretences. Sentence was deferred. The application of Matthew Henry Bennett, a bankrupt, for his order of discharge, which was before the Court at its last sitting, was again gone on with The trustee’s report w»s read, but failed to throw any material light upon the bankrupt’s affairs, in consequence of the inability of the trustee to obtain possession of certain books in possession of the son. A further adjournment of the case was, therefore, granted, and an order made for the production of the books in question. His Honor characterised the pro-

ceedings in connection with the bankrupt’s doings ns very questionable. At a meeting of the Town Council to-night the dratt of the address proposed to be presented to the Governor on the occ.i----v sion of his visit here on Thursday wao re id. It was resolved that the town should be illuminated, if arrangements could be made The parties illuminating to find gas at their own expense. The aid of volunteers and band in making the aff dr a success was asked. A meeting of citizens was also held to-night, to take steps to accord the Governor a suitable reception on his arrival here. It was resolved to hold a citizens’ ball and invito the vice-regal party, and to render the ball as popular as possible, it was decided to make the pr co of the tickets 12s fid, and to exclude wines and spirits from the refreshments. A strong committee was appointed, and the ball is to be hold on Friday night.
