NEWS OF THE DAY.

Sailing Match. —lt is probable that a match between the schooners Torea and Alert may yet be arranged for at Lyttelton. The respective owners are in treaty to that end, and the owners of the Alert have signified their readinees to have it come off. The captain of the Torea is awaiting instructions from Mr Mitchelson, of Kaipara, the Torea's owner. Breach of Domain Br-Law.—ln reference to a case that should have been heard in the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, but was not on account of the inability of the officer to effect a service of the summons, it was mentioned that the Park Ranger usually fails to furnish sufficient particulars concerning offenders to render identification easy. The charge was against one John Hill for a breach of the Domain Ey-laws in allowing a dog to wander in the North Park; but beyond the name given to the ranger, the police had no particulars that might serve to direct them to the whereabouts of the party wanted Theatrical. —Miss Tilly Andrews has seceded from the Hoskins dramatic company performing now in Napier, and has returned to Christchurch, her place being filled by Mrs Walter Hill. Mr J. F. Graham has also arrived in Christchurch prior to his departure shortly for England. He intends taking a farewell benefit before leaving this city, aad producing a new piece,? of which he is the author. Mr Graham has in addition to his professional admirers been fortunate enough to make a good many friends who will doubtless testify their appreciation of his abilities and regret at his departure by making his valedictory appeal a successful one. Death.—The announcement of the death of Mr James Gilligan, reported in our telegraphic intelligence this evening, will be received with regret by his many friends. The decease, though sudden, was not unexpected, as Mr Gilligan has been pronounced incurable for some time past by nis medical attendants. The Stewarts.—The entertainment entitled "Rainbow Revels," after a successful run of a fortnight at the Oddfellow's Hall, was withdrawn on Saturday to make room for "If," an entertainment especially written for the Stewarts by Mr Garnet Walsh, the well-known literateur of Melbourne. The change, if possible, was for the better, and the large audience assembled testified their appreciation of the performance by hearty round of applause and frequent encores. It will be repeated this evening. Anniversary Services.—The anniversary services of the Waltham Sunday School were held on Sunday last in the Colombo road church, sermons being preached by the Revs. W. B. Martin, J. Luxford, and C. Dallaston, the church in the evening being crowded to overflowing. The children sang a selection of hymns at each service in a very effective and pleasing manner, Miss Needham presiding at the harmonium; Mr G. Daltry ably conducting the singing. The annual soiree in connection with the above will take place to-morrow in the Waltham Church, at 6.30 p.m., after which, a public meeting will be held in the Colombo road Church, when addresses will be given and music rendered by the children. Special Goods Trains.—ln consequence of the late stoppage on the through line, it is proposed to run special goods trains until the large amount of wool, grain, stone, and other goods which now block up the various sheds along the line have been delivered. Water Supply.—The sub-committee appointed by the water supply committee to wait upon Mr John Anderson, for the purpose of ascertaining the cost and practicability of casting the necessary cylinders for testing Mr White's project for supplying Christchurch with water from the Waimakariri, have reported that Mr Anderson has expressed himself willing to undertake the casting of the necessary cylinders and other plant required for the scheme. Arrangements have been entered into with Mr Anderson for one cylinder to bo cast, and on the success of the experiment of sinking this will depend the completion of the nine which will be required to test Mr White's plan.
