SPORTING NOTES.

By Sin bad. [hbom the peess.] I was out to the course on Monday last, when Cutts sent Ariel stripped a slow threemile gallop on the plough. Bribery and Natator walked, and Merlin with his hood on, and Kama Rama stripped, went about two mi'es at a fai'- pace. The former seemed to go web. Agent, the new cross-country horse from Napier, and Ivanhoe went twice round the plough with the sweaters on. Fakir, another of the jumping contingent, was out with H. Lunn, but only did walking exercise. Bay sent Titania a steady three mile gallop by herself, and then Bide-a-wee and York went once round the plough, finishing home at a strong pace. In this flutter Bide-a-wee seemed to have the best of it. Shark and Templeton, both clothed, went once rovmd together, and were then joined by Standard Bearer and Frost Fish, the latter with his owner up. At the threequarter mile post Shark was pulled off, and the other three came along at an improved pace. Frost Fish soon died away, and not being persevered with, Standard Bearer and Templeton finished together. Oberon, Atlantic, and Luna went a !, out a mile and a half steady, and Maritana did a good s'rid-ng gallop twice round the plough. Ratcatcher way sent about the same distance by himself, and Moose followed suit. John Stofel did walking exercise. 'Piccadilly, Undine, and Biddy, a mare Mr Webb is training for the Ellesmere meeting, were sent a serviceable gallop of a mile and a half. Trump Card and Jangler cantered. The work done on Thursday morning was very scanty. Ariel cantered, and then Cutts sent llama Rama and Merlin, both clothed, a smart gallop once round the plough. Merry Monarch, stripped, did a mile and a half steady. Oberon followed suit. Luna went about three mile?, the last mile or so at a fair pace. Atalanta and Moose, the former with the sweaters on, were sent a mile and a half slow. Shark went a slow gallop twice round the plough, and Ratcatcher about the same distance at a better pace. Mufti, who arrived during the week, and who has taken up his quarters at the Bush Inn, went a slow mile and a half with the clothing on. Fakir and some others were out, and did slow work. Ray's team did not put in an appearance, and the Bush Inn string only walked. ; 4 mooting was held at Ashburfcon during fche Avgefe, whe* it was arranged that a racq

meeting should be held on the 30th May The various officials were selected, and a programme drawn out. The programme of the Dunedin Birthday meeting is to hand It comprises a Handicap Hurdle Race of 40 sovs, a Maiden Plate of 35 sovs, a Trotting Race of 40 sovs, the Birthday Handicap of 120 sovs, a Selling Race of 35 sovs, the Tradesman's Handicap of SO sovs, and a Consolation of 40 sovs Nominations must be made to Mr Sydney James to-day, and general entries and acceptances close on May 17th. Mr C. F. Barker announces, by advertisement which appears elsewhere, his first sale of thoroughbred and racing stock. Among those to ha offered are Tfmpleton, Titania, Bide-a-wee, Mireille, Fishhook, Luna, and o hers now in training, besid'-s a number of yearlings on account of Mr Wel>b. The sale will take place on April 24th at Miilett's Horse Repository. At the same time and place Messrs. Ford and Co., in conjunction with Mr Tabart, will offer three fillies and one colt on account of the Middle Park Company. In the advertisement which refers to the sale, Mr Barker also announces the fact that he purposes issuing a list of the thoroughbred stallions in the colony, their stables, and the fees charged. Owners are requested to forward information to Mr Barker. This, I have no doubt, they will gladly do, as the intended list is as much to their interest as it will bo a convenience to breeders.

The Tai Tapu races last week passed off well. Old Ivanhoe won the Hurdle Race very easily from Young Diomedes, who, properly brought out, would be a long way above the average of cross-country horses. Satan was out of it after the first mile und a half, and Eclipse, who was not himself, seemed outpaced both in this and the Tai Tapu Cup. This event was won easily by Merry Monarch, who made his own running throughout, and did not require the assistance of his stable companion Maritana. The latter, I fancy, could have won easily if wanted, Symphony, who came in front of her, only took second honors on sufferance, and Harlequin, who ran unkindly, only lasted a mile and a half. Orange Peel easily wm both the Maiden Plate and District Cup, and Lemon Juice breaking down in the Ahuriri Stakes, the race was a gift to Mountain Maid. The District Hurdle Pace was won easily by Charlie, who jumped well.

The weights for the Auckland Handicaps have appeared. If Punga be in anything like the nick she was a few days before the Dunedin meeting, I don't see any animal in the race I should fancy more, and the Steeplechase, I think, will go, as on several previous occasions, to Perfume. Mr Bradley, who has taken up his quarters at John Lunn's old place near the Race Course, will have charge of the hounds for the season.

The usual race privileges for the coming Autumn Meeting will be sold at Radcliffe's Commercial Hotel this afternoon, at four o'clock.

"Pegasus," writing in reference to the coming Grand National Steeplechase, says that Banjo and Tommy Dodd have been turned out by their respective owners for a year's rest He also is my authority for stating that Stewart; Waddell has purchased Sir Tatton, and will shortly take up his quarters at Dan O'Brien's. On the Queen's Birthday will be held a steeplechase meeting at Wanganui. Tho programme includes a Handicap Steeplechase (three miles) of 150 s >vs, Maid n Plate of 75 sovs, and a Consolation of 25 sovs.

The steeplechase horse Don has gone to Dan O'Brien for his preparation for the Grand National. Don has not been trained for the last two or three seasons, but ran well at the Grand National Steeplechase meeting held in Christchurch the season before last.
