HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITION.

The Christchurch Horticultural Society held the first exhibition of the season yesterday in a large tent in the grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, The attendance during the earlier part of the day was not very large, but later in the afternoon the tent became more crowded. The exhibition as a whole was not in point of exhibits tabled equal to that of last year and some of the preceding seasons. We noticed that several old names were absent, and the want of their plants, cut flowers, and vegetables was very noticeable. Those exhibitors, however, who did send their articles, made a very fair show, and one or two new plants were sent which are decided acquisitions to the society and to the public. A new and rare plant, the ivy-leaved geranium, Konig Albert, exhibited by Messrs Duncan and Hon, attracted a large share of attention; as also did another rare plant exhibited, by Mr 'G. Gould, the Strelitza Regina. The show of orchids, rhododendrons, gloxineas, &c, was also very good. We may give special mention to the show col lection of pot plants sent for exhibition by Messrs Duncan and ton, Mr A. Davidson, gardener to Mr Gould, and Mr J. Greenaway,

In the open class, Mr D. Nairn and Son exhibited several highly creditable productions, and no doubt in the future they will be found formidable competitors. Mr Reade, as usual, sent all his exhibits clean and well got up, and the other prize takers had evidently bestowed care on their selections. The judges remarked that they desired to call special attention to the following exhibits, viz :—Mr Wallace’s twelve roses (cut blooms), Mr Gould’s, Mr Lysaght’s, and Mr Greenaway’s collections of plants (for exhibition only), Mr Craves pansies, and Mr Jackman’s two trays of roses,

The collection of vegetables sent by Mr J. Allen was excellent, as also were the cucumbers of Mr T, Wallace.
