The grain market is quite inanimate, no business ■whatever belujj reported. Wheat is nominally ss, but no sales have been effected during the week. English advices continue to be most unfavorable to shippers last season, and we fear some heavy losses will result. Flour is meeting rather an improv< d demand for local use, as a feeling exists that higher prices will rule before next harvest A very active enquiry exists for oats, and 5s oil ands s9d has been paid for local use. A .-mall shipment has been received from California via Auckland, and are now selling at, 5s 3d in Lyttelton, or 5s 4}d in Christohureh. Butter is becoming more plentiful'at Is. and in another week or so prices must come much lower. Haras and bacon meet an excellent demand at K>',d bare, and lid in elothF.o B. A moderate business Ins been done in the import markets during the pa-t week. Stocks have been considerably augumented by the arrival of the Endymion from London on the 22nd instant, with full cargo of general merchandise. There lias been great activity in the hop market; we hear of several sales of Kent's at is lOd to Is luidj holders are asking Is lid for prime samples. ENGLISH COMMERCIAL. •WOOL. Messrs Dalgety, Ducroz, and Co., report on September 3rd, as iollows : The third series of wool sales opened on 18th August, with the following quantite- to hand : Hales. New South Wales and Queensland ... 44,300 Victoria 6*903 South Australia 11,500 Tasmania 7,«J0 Western Australia i,7C3 New Zealand 8.\9»0 Cape of Good Hope 45,9()0 Total 260,800 Of which 93,800 bales have been catalogued up to last night, and with very lew exceptions *old. The range of prices assimilates closely ro those obtained in June last, which were tin: best of the second series of sales ; for cross-bred and co use wools there is improved enquiry, doubtless attributable to domestic wool having recently recovered a portion of itt previous fall. Thiiß far the principal purchases have been on English account, which is explained by the cautious and limited action of home buyers earlier in the year. For America there have been a few transactions, chielly in New Zealand, of good staple and yery light in grease. Arrivals from that Colouy (86,000) bales, afford buyers an unusually large choice, which is to the prejudice of faulty and irregular parcels. our harvest has proved very abundant, and there are ample foreign supplies of wheat also available, so that cheap bread is assured for the populations of the northern hemisphere for many months forward. We are justified in anticipating favorable results from tliis, as well as from the prospect of a moderate value of money, upon manufacturing industries generally, arid the woollen trade is already becoming more active. But it must not be forgotten that up to this date our Australian import is 60,000 bales in excess of the previous clip, besides 20,00( bales afloat; hence it is premature to judge whether the February sales of 1875 will find manufacturers as bare of stocks as they were upon the opening of the wool sales of the present year. WHEAT A.M> I'LOliR. Messrs Miles Bros report on September 4th--The wheat market continues much d -pressed, without any recovery from the great fall which took place in prices ten dajg since, and as colonial samples have to compete with new English, the former are much neglected even ai a considerable decline, and parcel are now passed by which would have been freely taken d x weeks ago. Australian wheat may now be quoted ai from r,-, 8 to 00s per -10 lbs ; and New Zealand. Ins to&i» ; Australian and X.Z flour, 35s to Vis 28011)8. Owing t() llle K0(ld condition in which our crop lias been se^, rc( j - - lV( , think that, prices are likely to rule low for I lie ■•'ominir year. TALLOW AND [IIDI.S. Oilmen's stores have met with inquiries, and a line of pickles, sauces, &c, has been placed at full rates. We understand that a meeting under the Act is called for Monday next in the estate of Messrs Samuel Macirregor and Co , the well-known auctioneers of stock and produce, ea'rving on business in Wannambool, Belfast, ant Sfawell. The liabilities, it is rumoured, amount to £OO.OOO in round numbers. The first sale of the new clip of wool was held this afternoon at .Messrs tt. Goldsborottgb and Co.'s wool warehouses. The " opening sale of the season " is always an event of great interest to the mercantile and squatting community, and on this occasion the spacious saleroom was thronged with representatives of thr- various clases interested. The catalogue submitted comprised 3209 bales, which included some very fine clips from Eiverina. The biddings were animated throughout, and the sale passed off satisfactorily, buyers showing a strong desire to operate at full rates. A few lots were bought in. but offers were so close to reserves that business will likely result privately. Greasy realised from lod to 13|d the latter being for a superior clip from Rivcrina; fleece, up to 23d.
