TURF GLIB'S CONCLUDING DAY TURANGA, STAKES TO D.K FRIEND QUAINT WINS HACK CUP TOTALISATOR INVESTMENTS DOUBLED!

With fine weather with the 'excopI,"on of a very slight shower during ihe afternoon andi a heavier fall lor the nast race, the Poverty Bay Turf Club brought to a conclusion at Makaraka domain on Saturday its most successful lucet’ng for many years. The going 'was good, and the attendance very large, the scenes) on the lawn resembling those of twelve or fifteen years ago, when racing was booming in the d’’strict. The fields were quite large enough to attract ’•peculafon by all classes, and. ««

money is more pleutilul. the tutulisator attendants; were kept busy, the uum put through the machine being double the amount last year.

During the day the judicial commit tee met to inquire into a compla’nt in connection with the Harbor Hack Handicap on the first day. After

hearing evidence Walsh was suspended for 'one mouth under irnle 289 of the Rules of Racing.

Two new races appeared, on the card on Saturday. Tho Roseland Hack Handicap was changed to the G. B. Oman Memorial Stakes as a tribute to the late Mr Oman, the well-known official of the club, and one of its best supporters, for many years. The Publicans 1 Purse was also dropped in favour of the Hack Cup.

A -substantial increase in the totalise tor investments was anticipated on Saturday but few expected, that llio amount put through the previous year would, be more than, doubled, the mini invested on the machine being £B72S 10s against £4326 10s- on the second day last year, ant increase of £4402. For the two days tho total on the machine was £14.113, compared with £7221' last year, an increase of £6992. This is the largest sum put through for many years, and needles® to say, gave much pleasure to the officials of the club. Tho pubteals o were keenly interested for it is generally recognised that the sum put through lie machine at a race meeting reflects the financ'al condition of the district. Judged on this basis, therefore. Gisborne is well back on the road to prosperity. The largest nmouujt on Saturday was invested on the Turanga Stakes, with a field of seven, tho sum of £1531 10s being placed on tho machine. Of this amount, the tickets' issued on Big Dook ran Into four figures, the largest number issued ».>n any horse for a very long, period.

At the conclusion of the Hack Cup Handicap, the trophy was. presented to Mr G. Brown, tho owner of Quaint the. ceremony taking place, in the enclosure. Mr F'. T'olerton, president o'.' t-h', club, congratulated Mr Brown, who. die ST,id, had been a good supporter of racing in the district some years, and all were pleased to see him win the cup. In the course of a brief reply. Mr Brown, after returning thanks, attributed bis success to lrs trainer, Mr P. J, Wornrald. and the jockey, H. Calla-lian. Cheers for the owner, trainer and rider concluded the ceremony.

The most successful rider on the day was H. Callahan, with two wins, followed by A. E. Lord, P'. Atkns, R. Marsh. S. Anderson, and T. Dornan with onci apiece. During the meet : ng .T. Kellott. H. Callahan, A. E. Lord. T. Dor nan and S. Anderson each piloted home a, brae.?, while H. Gilmer. C. S. Shield, P. Atkins, and R. Marsh rticli rode one winner.

Training honors on Saturday were again taken by J. W. Nixon, who was responsible for two winners', other eiuccsssful mentors being J. Olsen, (Hastings), and H. Martin. I. T. Tinsley, P. J. Worm aid, and W. Coxcomb, all of Gisborne, with one winner each. J. W. Nixon easily heads the list for t-lie meeting with four winners, followed by W. Goscomb

with two, and C. Haldane {Hastings) and H. "Martin, I. T. Tinsley, P. J. Wormakl, and A., McDonald, all of Gisborne, with one apiece. An energetic committee headed by tho 'president, Mr F. Tolerton, did everything possible to ensure success and were well supported! by the secretary, Mr H. E. Dodd, and a callable staff. ■

Mr P. A. Pettit was again ig the judge's, box, .and bis decisions gave no cause for dissatisfaction despite several very close finishes. Mr L. Murray who was in charge of tile barrier, had a troublesome task at times but issued from tho ordeal with every success Tho afternoon’s 1 enjoyment was much enhanced; by select'ons; by the WUE.C.M.R. Band. Results of the races' are- ,as follows : SECOND HURDLES HANDICAP, of '£9o. second £ls, third £lO from the stake.. Over seven flights of hurdles. One mile and Hirecquarters. 2_Mr W.
