GAS-PROOF SHELTER
NEW FLATS IN LONDON. .ROOM: FOR 200 PEOPLE. LONDON, Aug. 15. An eight-floored block of luxurv flats in Regent’s Park, London,-is two first building in England in which the eoroperation of the Home Office Jia--* boon secured to provide complete bomb-proof and gas-proof shelter. The 250 people who will live in the flats wib. be able to stay four or five days at a. time in the shelter, which is below ground level, and is built of con crete, reinforced with steel, and lined with asphalt as a precaution against flooding. 'i There are two entrances, each with gas-proof doors, duplicated to provide air locks. When these doors are. closed the shelter becomes hermetically sealed until the ventilation apparatus is operated. When this is in action outside air is drawn through protected shafts from, points 30 feet above ground.and passed through ‘liters and distributing ducts. “Used” ai- is released outside through valves adjusted to maintain pressure prevent! ng infiltration. There will bn an independent watersupply of 2000 gallons, sleeping bunks' arid sanitary arrangements unconnected with tho main drainage. Provision is made for radio and gramophone “distraction.”
