TURF

RACING FIXTURES. July 22—Rangitikoi Hunt Club. July 23, 25—Poverty Pay Turf Club. July 25—South Canterbury H.C. July 25—Alanawatu iI.C. POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB. TOTALISATOR INVESTMENTS. NEW CONDITIONS. As tho outcome of instructions i' sued by tho Alin is tor of Internal Af fairs (Hon. W. E. Parry), there- will be an alteration in the units of investments on the totalisator at the Park racecourse in future. Of late years, only two tickets have been issued—lo - and £2/10/-. Now, apparently, as a definite sign that prosperity is in sight and money will lie more plentiful, three tickets will be issued—lo/-. Cl and £5. Tho secretary of the! club, Mr 11. E Dodd, points out that tho issue of the £l ticket is an advantage, to the investor. The totalisator does not pay out in fractions, only up to sixpences. lie quoted as an example the case of a winner paying £l/18/0 The holder of tho 10/- ticket is* paid only 19/-, by reason of the rule 10garding fractions. If he had two 10/- tickets, he. would, therefore, roeeivo £l/18/-, but the holder of the £! ticket would receive £l/18/6, the full dividend. With money moreplentiful, if is expected that the* new rule will prove popular. The above alteration comes into force as the result of a communication from the N.Z. Racing Conference, stating that the Minister of Internal Affairs has laid down the following definite rules as to the display of dividends and provisions for the definite units of investments on the totalisator:—

(1) That at all totalisator meetings reasonable provision must 1 e mado for both 10/- and £1 investors and tickets for both denominations must bo made available. It will bo open to clubs to provide for large investments according to requirements.

(21 That tho main dividend display «t the totalisator must be for £1 tickets.

He left the Dominion in March- to visit a son in America. * * a Balbus broke his near fore-shoulder after completing a five furlongs, gallop with Lavish at Awapuni on Saturday morning and was destroyed. Ho went to the lead in the st-raignt, to ba several lengths iu front of the two-year-old at the post, and it was about 25yds. further on that the shoulder snapped. Owned and trained by the former hurdle horseman, ( . J Robinson, Balbus was a. four-yoar-olo gelding by Lapidary from Azeeta. Mo had always shown plenty of speed this season and had displayed improved. staying ability, which was in evidence when lie won over a mile and a. distance at Dannevivke. at the hegining of tho month.

A l'tc>r three successive victories the steeplechaser Windsor Lad disappointed his admirers when he ran unplaced in tho July Steeplechase on the third day of the Wellington Racing* Chili’s winter meeting. The class was stronger than any Windsor Lad had met previously and lie ran very moderately, jumping poorly and being beaten a long way from home. Kvm though his saddle slipped back in the running, he was not going impressively at any stage and he will require to do much better if he is to prove good. It was stated that Windsor Lad did nob do well at Trentham and bis defection from the Wellington Steeplechase on tho first day was deemed advisable on this account.

Again Billy Boy has shown now lightly ho carries his years. The season, which has iiow closed for him has seen him successful in throe im pr.rtant steeplechase events—the Waikato, Great Northern and July Steeples, while ho has been twice placed third, and seven times put of the money. His total earnings for tne term aro £l4-70, his best since lie was a sevenyear-old, when he won £1595. To date, ho has contested -64 races for 12 wins, five seconds, nine/ thirds and MS times unplaced, his aggregate winnings being £5260. His next mission will ho the Grand National at Iticearton.

On In basis of wins to the number ot starts of the champion racehorses of the past, tho best record was held by Gloaming, whoso average was slightly better than eight wins in ten starts. Nqxt in order of merit -was Carbine, whose average was slightly less than eight in ten -starts. Phar Lap’s tally ’.vas slightly'less than spven, Eurythmic’s moro than six, Limerick’s slightly more than six, Windhag’s exactly five, Amounts’ , more than four, Heroic’s slightly more than four and Nifiht march’s, more, than tjjree. ! •■' ■.
