Tho fatalities, in the fortnight’s 'terrific nation-wide heat wave neared 1600.t0-day and the hope of early relief has been shattered as the weekend rains'fizzled out. Michigan leads the human losses with a total of 305 and Illinois is second with 200 deaths. Fifty persons died hourly in the United States during the daylight hours to-day. Wheat fluctuated widely on conflicting reports, finishing weak after recovering initial losses. Although failing to break the drought, the week-end rains greatly benefited the north-west, aiding the crops and pasturage, and lifting the fire scourge. WASHINGTON, July 13. It is officially announced that Mr Tugwell and other high officials arc leaving by aeroplane to-morrow for Bismarck, North Dakota, to prepare plans to turn large areas of wheat into pasturage and remove a considerable part of tho population. The officials, on returning, will tour the region where the drought has been most severe. It is reported that thousands of families are using their war bonuses to trek east and west, deserting the “dust howl.” ONTARIA SWELTERS DEATH ROLL TOTALS GCO (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright). TORONTO, July 13. Deaths throughout Ontario in the worst six-day heat wave in the history of the province mounted to GOO to-day, including 150 drownings. Toronto undertakers are using old equipment, and additional grave-dig-gers with hearses V ought sit from nearby towns. The provincial Department of Agriculture announced to-day that the heat damage in the garden industry, including the Niagara grape belt, will total millions of dollars.
A Winnipeg report states that a new heat record for Manitoba was set up at- Emerson to-day with a temperature of 112 degrees. Ra n. however, brought respite to crops in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
