On Monday . evening a farewell dance, organised by the various sports bodies was given in the Lyric kail to Miss Beryl Ensoll who left on 'Tuesday mOrning to take up her duties in the Point Chevalier School. Miss Ensoll haS been an enthusiastic member of the Surf Life-Saving* Cl.nb, Golf Club, Tennis Club, and Jazz Club, and her loss to such sports in the district will be keenly felt. During the evening Mr. A. G. Simpson presented to Miss Ensoll A .handbag containing a substantial chetju., at the same time expressing the regret of all present at her departure and wished her every happiness and success in her new surroundings. Daneo musci was supplied by the Bem la orchestra which contributed Ls services as a mark of appreciation of the guest of the evening. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. LC. East. The Monte Carlo danco was won by ills 3 J. floss and Mr. A. 0. Simpson. RUGBY. At the weekly meeting of the Opofciki Rugby Union a letter was received from the Rangita'ki Union, asking if a match could be arranged between junior representatives for the Shalfoon Shield. It was decided to. agree to the match being played tomorrow as a fcurtain-raiser to the senior match. A match for the senior teams was arranged between the Whakatohea tribal team and a ham selected from senior teams, the selected team to be changed at halltime with a view to giving os many players a game as possible. Ibis game has been arranged with a view to giving the Whakatohea team practice for its match against Ruatoria at Opotiki for the Ratana Cup on the following Saturday. In the event of the Rangitaik: juniors being unable to play the- Opotiki juniors as suggested, the junior .draw will be Torere v. Country on the reserve and City v. High School on the showgrounds.

The British Board of Education and Board of Trade are co-operating in a scheme to spread the use of the English language all over the world. semi-official body known as the British Council, supplied with funds from the Government, has awarded bursaries to 1-1 students from Germany. Austria, Norway, Sweden and Czechoslovakia, who are now in England at university colleges. These students will help to promote the teaching of English and the spread of British trade.
