CALCULATED AND DELIBERATE THEFT LOSS OF RABBIT SKINS THREE MONTHS' HARD LABOR (Press Association). DUNEDIN; July 1. The offence was a, calculated and deliberate one, said the magistrate,. Mr Bartholomew, in the Police. Court this morning, in Sentencing James Nicholas Gordon Hoslci-n, to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour for the theft, of rabbit-skins. The offence was a difficult one to detect. Hoskin was charged with the theft at Dunedin on or about Alay 22, of a quantity of rabbit skins valued at £l4, the property of Dalgety and 00., Ltd., or alternatively, of some person unknown. In a written statement accused said that he had been trapping,, shoot ing and digging out rabbits at. his father’s farm at Totnra since the- beginning of the year. The magistrate said that expert evidence showed that the skins could not- have been obtained a.s the accused stated. It had been clearly established that these were stolen skins.

It was alleged by plaintiff that defendant, as pilot of the machine., had negligently failed to .use reasonable care and skill in piloting, in that ho had not maintained an adequate flying speed or an adequate height above the ground, as the result of which the plane had stalled and crashed. After lengthy evidence had been heard the court reserved its decision.
