TOLL OF THE ROAD
HECKLESS DELING. MAORI FOUND GUILTY (Press Association). * WANGANUI, May 91. After a retirement of fid minutes, a jury at the Supreme f; o urt to-day found Barney Baukopa, married, aged ill, guilty of recklessly driving a motor cap on May 9 last, thereby causing tho death of Arthur Joseph Massey, aged 19. Prisoner was 'emarided for sentence. The trial are nas a result of a fatality which occur red on the main Auckland-Welling-ton highway, one and a-quarter miles south of Wanganui. Tho f evidence showed that deceased was one o' three cyclists cycling abreast on a straight stretch of road, deceased holing near the crown. An overtaking taxi swung out to pass them, when the oaf driven by accused, also dv2itakiiijg them, swung in between them and the. taxi anil the cyclists and struck deceased. Accused’s ear went oh, but was overhauled by tho. taxi and, later, accused drove hack to the scene of the 'accident and made a- statement to the police.
