LEPER PATIENT CURED
MEDICAL. INTEREST IN UNUSUAL CASE. NO SIGN OF LEPROSY. DISCHARGED FROM MAKOGAI. To repay a debt of gratitude, a iormer patient of the Quail Island leper station, and of recent years of the leper station at Makogai, called recoil tjly on Dr. C. H. Upham, of Lyttelton. The former patient. is now completely cured and has undergone strict tests both at Makogai and in Great Britain to prove that lie is now free of the disease.
The man, who was known as No. 10, contracted the disease in Fiji and was brought to Qutj.il Island early in 1925. At the island he came under the care of Dr. Upham, 'port medical officer at ■ Lyttelton, 'whose work on behalf of the leper patients was known much further afield than New Zealand., When the lepers were removed -to Makogai later the same year, No. 10 promised to, call u’poli. Dr. .Upham when cured, and it was'in fulfilment of; that promise that he visited Lyttelton, tile other day. (
The man .received his discharge as, cured at Makogai early last year, hut remained oil tlio island for sonny time afterwards. At tlie request, oL .the medical authorities lie visited Great Britain so that the remarkable circumstances of Lis cure could be studied and investigated by medical men there, who are interested in the disease. jn appearance No. 10 is a vigorously' healthy man and he hears no signs of ever having had leprosy. He intends to spend a few weeks in the North Island and wil then return to Fiji where a position is awaiting him.
