GOOD SALE AT WELLINGTON.

BULK OF CATALOGUE SOLD. CROSSBREDS SLIGHTLY DEARER (Press Association. Y WELLINGTON, Jan. G. Exceptionally keen competition from start to finish and an excellent clearance of a big offering were the features of the, second Wellington wool sale to-day. . T,he total, catalogued was 30,450 bales and 27,766 were sold at auction. There was a fully . representative bench of buyers. Bradford took a much more prominent jiart in tho sale, while German buyers assisted in giving stimulus to the market. Some large orders wore filled for Japan and the Continent and buying also was done for Canada, the United States and Australia. New Zealand mills were also operating on suitable lines. The top price was ISd for a line of Southdown. The first catalogue of 6400 bales met with keen competition. Buying was wider spread than at the last sale with a demand for fine wools still strong. The wool generally opened up attractively. It was light in condition and better grown with an estimated increase in weight of one pound per fleece more than last season. Ewe wool was sounder.

Representative prices realised early in tho sale were: Corriedale, lOd to lOd ; merino, 13d to 154(1; halfbred, 12d to 14d; tliree-quarterbred, 9d to 103 d ; halfbred hoggets, 9/<l to 12d ; fine crossbred, 9cl to ]Od; crossbred lambs, 9|d to 10/d; super lambs to 12d; Lincoln, 8d to 83(1; bellies, Gd to 7/d; necks, 8d to 9d ; pieces, 6fd to Sd; crossbred, lambs’ crutchings. 6d to 6pi. A line of Southdown hoggets, four bales, made 17d. Crossbred were about ->-d to 4d better than at the December sale.

At the wool sales 12,359 bales were offered, of wdiicb 11,879 were sold and 1195 bales were disposed of privately, under very strong competition from the Yorkshire and Japanese sections, supported to a great extent by the Continental section. Values were from par to 5 per cent, higher than the closing December rates, the improvement being most pronounced qn all well-grown descriptions. Comebacks and crossbreds when free participated in the improvement. Greasy merino sold to 22fd.
