TE KARAKA NOTES

PRESBYTERIAN FETE

(Special to the Timas.)

A highly successful- sale of work organised by the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild was held in the Waikohu Hall on Thursday last. Stalls did brisk business and were held as- under: Needlework, Mesdames Steel and Dpran; calces, Mrs C. Atkins; -produce, Mrs B. Swainson; jumble, Mrs Greggan; afternoon tea, Misses M. and J- Steel, H. Beer berry, E. Tait, and Mrs Smithers; sweats and iee cream, Mrs McKenzie and Miss V. • Bull. Much of the success of tbo function was due to- untiring efforts of tho president, Mrs A. Steel- ar-d the secretary, Mrs Doran, with the hearty co-oporation of tho -members of the Guild.

Miss Nancy;.Bruce, ; Gisborne, and Miss Peggy Appleton, Te Kqyaka, have lately been tho guests of Mrs W. J. Bruce, “Pukerua”, Ivanakanaia. .

(Special to tho Times). The December meeting was held on Uiursday with a very 'Small attendance. It having been decided to h o ld a Members’ Day, the usual officers •sat back. Mrs. N. Montgomery was elected to the chair, with Mr; C. P. Pedersen as secretary and Mrs. 11. Taylor, treasurer. Apologies were relieved from Miss Bulst and Mrs. R. Fleming. The- roll call was, “How I Should Like to Spend Xmas” and brought forth a general denunciation of the big hot Xmas dinner. Cold joints, with sweets and fruit being favored, with the exception of one Home-sick member, who demanded three feet of snow on the ground, with inside dlscoration, and the traditional hot English Xmas dinner, not forgetting the brandy blazing over the Xmas pudding. Another preferred to go camping. A lengthy discussion took place on the preparations for the big group picnic, which is to he held in Mr. H. E. Burgess’ front paddock on the bank of the Motu River, on January 25. Each member and visitor is requested to bring her own plate, saucer, cup, knife, fork and spoon, ’the Mutawai TV.T. members are to be wholly responsible for the luncheon, and other Institutes are requested to bring edibles for afternoon tea. The children are to be well provided for, swimming and other sports events having been arranged for all. Mesdames A. E. Gibson and A. Taylor

acted as hostesses for the afternoon tea. The trade table was quickly cleared, and the meeting closed with the singing of “God Save the King.”

CHILDREN’S XMAS PARTY

The Pat-utahi W omen’s Institute held 'tv jolly Christmas party for children on. Thursday evening. Tho Dramatic Circle attached to the Institute were hostesses, and served a dainty supper on tables adorned with seasonal blooms.

Early in the evening a concert programme by pupils of the school was carried out under the. direction of -Mr D. Edwards, whilst later tho children were enthralled (with the sudden appearance of Santa Claus in their midst. The stage curtains were drawn back to reveal a beautiful Christmas tree laden with presents

and gay with balloons and tinsel. Each of the young folk present rereived a gift at the hands of Father Christinas who also. made presentations to the Institute president and secretary, Mrs M. Walker and Mrs GV. Smith respectively. The concert programme was at) follows: Chorus, “The Farmyard” ; recitations, “The Sluggard”, by Jean Monteith; recitation, “Cleanliness”, Yvonne Williams; play, “The Lost Boys” Stds. 1 and 2; recitation, “Who Loves the Trees Best”, Shirley Knight; chorus, “Gentle Spring” re (station, “Leaves are Falling”, Alan Atkins; recitation. “The Farmer’s Lament” ; chorus, “E Pari Ra” Maori children; recitation, “The Eskimo Baby” Marie Sewell; recitation, “Red in Autumn” .Alina Atkins; duet, Jean Monteith and Muriel Atkins; recitation, Pat McFarland, play, “The Visitors” Stds. 1 and 2.
