“Prince of Retailers.” John Wanamaker comuitmced business in April,* 1861. The first day’s takings amounted to £5 3s 9jd. Of this amount he spent £5 on newspaper advertising for next day’s business and kept 3s 9sd in the till for change. He maintained that general policy, and built up America’s greatest retail business. John Wanamaker was the biggest retail advertiser in the world.
