NEXT WEEK’S MEETING

ACCEPTANCES CLOSE TO-NIGHT

YESTERDAY’S TRAINING

GALLOPS

Acceptances tor tho first day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s steeplechase meeting, to open next Thursday, close with the secretary, Sir H. E. Dodd, at 8 o’clock this evening. Fast work done on the track yesterday morning was confined to the inside grass, whicli is cutting up on the turns and therefore very slow. The most interesting gallops were as follows: Sunny Sky (Kerr) and Fortune (Te Rori) were sent seven furlongs, whih took them 1.37. to complete, rather a poor effort, a?s they both had light weights up. TJiia (Rangi) sprinted nicely over a few furlongs. Alby (Lorrigan) sprinted two lurlongs at the finish of two rounds of half-pace work. He looks well after his .strenuous 1 racing. Pohika (F. Dunn) and Gasman (C. Davds) were kept together over five furlongs which was timed atlm. Usee. Both could have improved. Bonny Song (Te Rori) and Vanestew (N. Davis) took 54sec. to run half a. mile, the last three in dlsee., a disappointing effort. Tai Ao ent a good working gallop with a fair weight up, sprinting home over the last three furlongs in •10s ec. Blue Vision (I. Tinsley) Do Friend (A. Tinsley), Ace Willonyx (F. Dunn) and Small Boy (W. Gornm) were schooled from the 'Starting barrier by Mr Leo Murray. De Friend and Ace Wfllonyx went away but, owing to' the two outside horse's getting Interfered with by the bander, Dc Friend was still in front at tlio five furlong post. The hunter, New Ferry, went six furlongs in 1.20, a useful gallop for this cla'sis of house. Warvane and Big Dook did not Hit out freely while galloping five furlongs in LG. Brasher (Kellett), Golden Pennant fW. Gomni), and Flying Mimic, after a fake start, ran five 'furlong* in 1.9, the first named doing best easily. Mr Arnold’s mare, Flying Mimic is still fairly big. BotbweU rail the last four of seven furjongisi- in 55 sec. comfortably. Memnon and Marching Song took 1.38 to get to the end of seven fur■longs. • ■ A large number of horse y were given only pace work. ! ; THE JUMPERS

Isms (F. Dumi), Victor ■ Oolima (Tinsley), and Tyrone Boy set out on a round' over the trial fences, but Tyrone Boy ran. off- at the first fence. The. other two, however,. gave a fair exhibition, jumping each fence together. Isms’ display was encouraging. Tyrone Boy wan', then, sent a round, his rider (Cliff Zupperzich), ipalving him do his.schooling in a fair mannert ' ■ . ' Victor Colima and Isin,s took limn. fßspc: for their round. _ •./Star. Finder went just as well as Johpi Charles: ini a ; bout over three fepces,- after which Star Finder, who liad~ previously - jumped a few,, fences, JViVs. :Pußed up/ ./and John : Charles .Went-oyer another fence yalone. . •» First , Prince (F. Dunn) jumped .’?afejy .over a round of - tho steeplecba~o lences. :.. . '-■ m

PRINCE POMBAL’S RECORD. GLOWING PRESS TRIBUTE. {U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright.) SYDNEY, July IS. S. Cush, the lessee anfi trainer oi Priuc e Poinbal, mho won under 10.7 in a race record Lime yesterday, has decided that the former New Zealander will compete in future in Mel bourne, where the prize money is more attractive.' Prince Pornbal has not had a spell JOr two years. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on tho race, says Prince . Pombal's record time was a remarkable performance. He overcame more than weight difficulties. H 0 <va„ hurdled off at tho start and hod to cover extra ground. “Ho raced against « strong head wind, but possesses the heart of a Hon,’’ concludes tho comment. • NOTES AND NEWS. Outside Highgrader and Dozie, tho biggest, disappointment at Trentham from Hastings was Maine. Before leaving, in two different gallops, she accounted for Mercian Prince and Royal Banquet and, what is more to the point, gave weight away to the pair, yet at Trentham a third was her best. Her second display was difficult to account for and she cost Hawke’s Bay sports dearly. • o • Arctic King, who was responsible for two outstanding performances at tho Wellington meeting, and has brought his present sequence of successes to five, is a tliree-year-old gelding by the Paladin horse, Rabbi, from Kilbroney—Snowstell mare, Snowland, thus inbred closely to a very successful Stonyhurst family, for Rabbi is also a descendant of Snowstell. He is a typical stayer who may before long be achieving fme in much better class. He is held on lease by the young Trentham trainer, W. J. Wood. » • • The Awapuni-trained but Te Auteowned Hunting Jay had all the tongues wagging the first day when he annexed the hack hurdles at Trentliem and his prospects for later engagements were discussed in glowing terms. On Saturday he was installed as one of the hottest favorites of the meeting, but was easily defeated by Debut, who only a week previously was a bad last in a field of duffers at Dannevirke, once more emphasising the fact that there is nothing like a horse to fool one. Hunting Jay did not fence nearly so well on Saturday as he did on the opening day. • • O It will be remembered that in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase last season, when Manuiri won, it was said his rider, W. J. Bowden, could have won on any of the three placed horses. So' it was again in tho Wellington Steeplechase, when the veteran rider steered Valpeen to victory and good judges declare that “Billy” would havo won on either his own mount, Ruby Meteor or Dunmure.

Bold Jim, owned by Mr J. Wallace, the well-known Palmerston N. sportsman, dropped dead at A wap uni on Saturday morning. With S. Edwards, one of It. E. Hatch’s -apprentices, in the saddle, Bold Jim had cantered once, round the course but on being pulled up it was noticed that all was not well with Bold Jim. Edwards jtnst having time to dismount before the horse collapsed and died. Bold Jim, who was trained by E. W. Watson, who is at present in hospital, was a very useful -sort and he had promise of developing into a good handicap horse.
