PICK-A-BACK ’PLANE
FLYING BOAT TO CARRY seaplane. PULLING OF ,LEVER WILL SEPARATE THEM. (U.P.A. by Elec. Ter, Copyright.) t (Received April 25, 6 p.m.) LONDON, April 25. A strange aircraft, composed of two separate self-contained units ? is an invention of Major R. H. Mayor, and is now taking shape at Short’s works, Rochester with the Air Ministry’s backing. The idea is for a heavy-power-ed flying boat, which can accommodate above its wings another heavily laden seaplane which, otherwise, would not be able to take off from the water under its own power. ' The combined power of the engines, both on an interlocked shaft, will give easy rise from the water. When sufficient altitude and speed have been gained, the pulling of a lever will separate the pair, the seaplane going its own way and the flyingbdat returning to the water to repeat the lilting mission as often as desired. It is expected to be of inastliable value in sending off hT»vy mail planes, while the possibility of launching relays of bombers is also visualised.
