IMPROVED BUSINESS
REFLECTED IN TELEPHONE CALLS. DEFINITE TURN OF TIDE. A constant increase in the volum , of telephone toll traffic through.-at the last eleven months, showing accelerated progress towards the <mi of that period, demonstrates how the commercial activities of the Dominion are definitely improving, because this class of business is extremely sensitive to business fluctuations.; Any slackening in demand for commodities at once lessens the telephone “turn-over.” It is satisfactory to find from official figures furnished by the Post Office that this indication of improved business conditions commenced in October, 1933, and has been steadily maintained. The most recent indications of this position are provided by the following details of the monthly volume of toll calls of ail classes, compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year : 1934 —April, . 744,501 calls,-8.03 per cent, increase; May, 806,399, 7.65; June, 728,103, 9.90; July, 734,943, 6'.44; August, 780,842, 6.20; September 735,176, 3.22; October, 822,001, 11.23; November, 844,926, 11.35; December, 935,198, 10.80. 1935: January, 941,988, 10.83; February 866,861, 12.45.
