Farmers greatly concerned
Concern, over the existence of eczema in stock was expressed at a meeting of th e Amalgamated Farmers’ and Dairyfariners’ Unione and after some discussion the meeting agreed that representations should he made, for research to be carried out in the jVlanawatu district in an endeavour to find out the causes of the disease. In a letter from the Levin branch it was stated' that a resolution was passed asking tre Director-General of Agriculture to provide for more urgent steps to be taken in combating the spread of the' disease, and that an agrostologist be appointed to work in the Levin district to act with rvetcrinary officer in an endeavour to ascertain the exact cause of tlm complaint. According to th 0 letter R bad been stated that the disease was developing just as rapidly as when first, noticed 1 six or seven weeks before. Many believed! that it was not the result of a strong growth of grass alter the bob, dry Summer weather, «s sheep grazing on ft ?sh green pastures for several week's wore developing the disease as rapidly as those affected when the complaint was first noticed, ft' wn fi also stated in tbo letter that, many farmers Wore still very alarmed at the serious effect (if the disease on their flocks. Moving th e resolution as a remit Ur If. J. MoLeavey remarked that the disease was very prevalent. It. was the opinion of Mr W. 0 Shannon that 10,060 sheep had the complaint in fliis district, and more were being stricken every day. The chairman. Air N. Campbell, thought the remit should be made to apply for research over the M.qnawatu district, and not merely in the Levin area. Mr Tl. Seifert moved an amended remit that flie research be carried out, over tho Mnnnwatu district as a whole. He knew of two lloeks on n farm where one had suffered and yet the other was free.
