RECENT THEATRE
‘HAPPINESS AHEAD" AND “THE SPECTACLE MAHER'’
Tiie principal feature on the Regent’s programme which commences to-day is one which should appeal to j all lovers of light drama with music. ; This film is “Happiness Ahead”, | in which Dick Powell rings tour new j songs related to the theme, and stars j with . Josephine Hutchinson , a rc- j emit from the New York and Lon- j don stages. Josephine, a society i girl, bees from "the party in celeb l- a- j tion of her engagement to her ans- , tocratic lover, ■ and joins a New j Year’s Eve party in a chop suev res- j taurinit, and it is there that she ! meets •• the manager of a windowcleaning company, and romance and : adventure. Family protests and coin j plications arising out of Josephine’s posing as a working girl create situations both humorous and dramatic, and the story develops to a great ancl thrilling climax.e “Ihe Spectacle Maker” the second ’ feature, is graded AAA plus by Smith s Weekly, and the story tolls of a ma- j gic lens made by Hans Schmidt. Hans has two loa-cs only — his grandson, Peter, and his work. Peter is a cripple, pathetically envious of other children who can dance and play. A rich nobleman visits Hans, and say® tht if he could make a glass j through which one could see only i things o ; f beauty, he would become j rich. It is. a simple enough story, but it is in the telling of it that the picture elevates itself to . great heights. The color photography Is really a wonderful tribute to the mechanical side of production, clear and natural to an uncanny degree.
