NOTES AND NEWS. One of the best backs produced in tbe north for sonic time is Te Hai, He scored! a victory oyer Gay Defence at Dargaville and then won a hack event the first day at Whangarei, revealing exceptional pace from the barrier and the others failed' to catch him. Muskon got to him at the distance but lie fought her off in great fctyle. On the second day Te Hai drew the ace, andi broke through three times with the result that the stai ter placed him on the outside behind the field'. Even then he show-ed-sufficient brilliance to bit tbe front at the end of a furlong from this awkwardly placed starting point. He kvas only collared by High Tea near the post. Had To Hai won again it would have tickled the crowd immensely, for they even roared their ap precision 'when he got to the front so soon after the start. This hack is a five year old by The Ac e from Elsie Aroba by Elysian and he will be the best of this mare’s progeny.

It was only condition that brought about Gay Marigold’s defeat in the principal event, at Whangarei. She was certainly aided by a run through on the rails nearing the straight and over the fi na l furlong but she failed by a head) to stall off Imamint. The latter wa s in receipt of 321 bso the honors were with the topweight. Gay Marigold should be seen to advantage at Ellerslie and Avondale. N* * Riding engagements for the Ellerslie meeting are:—L. Dulicu : Fleetwind; R. W. McTavish: Korokie, Gay Broney. Galilee; J. F. Fergus: Lmperial Prince. Record Flight (second day); S. Tremain : Kelly, Mung a toon. Brilliant Acre. Lady Diana; H. Goldfinch: Du Barry. Gay Marigold, Impasto. Nun Nicer Flood Tide; J. Winder; Gay Seton For a Acre Kings Archer; A. Gilmer Ruby Meteor. Adalene. * » « Sir Abb wag certainly the best hack seen out hi Whangarei, while Tybalt and Bonnie Gav showed themselves good sorts in this class. The former won well the first d'ay and then nar roiwly defeated) Monanui the second day in th e big event- although the latter ought to have won; she came out from a moderate field. Sir Abb sticks very well and next season he may he a good handicap horse, while in the meantime h e is in at Ellerslie and' it wAs the intention to enter him for events at Egmoß fixture. He is bred being by David from Vocal Princess, by C°medy King from Pippingale a daughter of William the Third and’ Chelandry by Goldfinch. * * * Two contrasting performances at Whangarei wer e those of the maiden High Tea. On the opening day he was alway s in the rear after being a bitslow away, while on the second! day he came from well hack with a rare burst, to cut do urn Te Hai. It was tbc effort of a good hack and of course in his form, everything being satisfactorily explained by those most concerned!. On the first day High Tea was backed on the win machine to the extent of £‘39 and when, he won R odds of about a- tnfrd of a century he carried) only £l2. The Tea Tray— Refinement three year old! who is a half brother to that one time excellent Australian performer Mystic Peak may go on with it now that he lias learned what is required of him. * * * An Australian paper says that Keith Voitre’s fame has spread to the country districts, where he regularly rides and! his popularity is so great and. his skill as a rider so admired that a well known* country owner whoso candidate was narrowly defeated by Voitre’s mount, said; “Well I’ll, be ——. My fellow should have walked in. That kid!—how do you pronounce his iiarnof—could win on a- clotlie s horse.” * * * Southdown has put oil a- considerable amount of weight since .his recent opreatiou and. when next par udedl racegoers will se c a big difference in him as compared with his appearance earlier in the season. He is not to be hurried and his present daily task of slow work on the santl is to bo continued for a- while yet.
