SALES TAX
YIELD GREATLY EXCEEDS ESTIMATE. DEMAND FOR. RELIEF. (Press Association). WELLINGTON, April 17 The Government’s yield from the sales tax was now greatly exceeding the original estimate of £1,600,000. The interests of the taxpayers should be considered, and the Government should grant them the relief to which they are entitled by making a corresponding reduction in the rate of the tax. This was > the conclusion reached by a committee of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, which reported to a meeting of the council last night. The meeting decided to make strong representations to the Government, if possible through the Associated Chambers of Commerce. The report stated that the official estimate of the yield of the tax for a full 12 months was £1,600,000, hut for the year 1934-35 the yield will probably be in the neighbourhood of £2,200,000, which •is roughly onethird more than the estimate. It wa:s pointed out that there was a very great danger that the increase in the yield from this tax may ontcouragd '.increased 'Government expenditure.and a reluctance on the part, of the Government to curtail so prolific a source of revenue
