POPPY DAY APPEAL
EFFORT BY GISBORNE R.S.A
Postponed from last Saturday, Poppy Day will be observed to-day by tbe Gisborne R.S.A. and the remindor of Flanders will bn on sale to-day -from an early hour. Those willing to assist in the sales are invited to come forward to-day. The association was unfortunate in having to- postpone the annual sale of poppien from Saturday last, when inclement weather made it inadvisable to permit tbe enthusiastic sellers to undertake the various duties for which they had volunteered. Hal it been possible to withhold the launching of the sales for a feu hours, and then proceed, Saturday probably would have produced an ex cellent return; and the association is now faced with the necessity of making a special effort to overcome the . disadvantages >of trie postponement.
Sponsored by a group of veterans whose .'.oncein for tho welfare cf dis tressed comrades has been manifested over a period of several years, the appeal is one that should go right to the hearts of the public this year, as it has done in the past. Many people to-day find it difficult to spare even the shilling asked for a. pappy bloom, but it seems assured that none will grudge trie contribution, in view of the use to which the returns of Poppy Day sales will he allocated; and in view, also, of the excellent record of the Gisborne association in the disbursement. of Poppy Day funds in tbe past. The public is urged to make to-day a remembrance of the sacrifices offered by men who survived the war, but .who to-day find themselves in serious econonrc difficulties, due in a substantial measure to their war services.
