•‘The princip] e i s right,” said Mr J. S. Chisholm, when the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association received n gift of £2 2s from the Christchurch Tramway Board to th c association instead' of sending a wreath on-Anzac Day There was a good deal of discussion at the meeting- of the board when it was decided to send a cheque instead of a wreath. “In these times of distress it is a crying shame that three, four and up to five guineas is spent on wreaths'” said Mr Chisholm. "We should appreciate very much the example which the Train way., Board has set. There, is to returned men a sentimental value in a wreath, of course, but the time has come when practical assistance is 0 f more value than sentiment.” The amount was placed in the Poppy Bay account, and will he used to help needy returned soldiers.
