WAIROA FLOODS
WORST FOR YEARS. FIVE FEET OF WATER AT NUHAKA. (Press Association). ; WAIROA, April I.L . The heaviest flood experienced for many years occurred at the week-end in the Wairoa district. A number'of bridges were carried away, culverts washed out, and slips came down on almost every road. The river, which was in high flood, almost reached the level of the traffic ’ bridge. A large amount of driftwood and timber has been washed up -on the beaches. At Tukemokihi it is reported that loin, of rain fell in 18 hours. Nuhaka township was inundated by flood water, many dwellings having one to five feet of water inside. Mr. W. Neville, a- farmer on Portland Island, who was proceeding to his home by launch with a load of stores, was reported missing, hut was later reported to be safe at Maliia, where he was washed ashore with, his launch. The highway to Napier is open to traffic. Slips on Joblin’s Hill, on the Wairoa-Gisborne road are being removed and passengers aTe being transferred. Heavy losses of stock are reported from Nuhaka. At the height of Uio storm on Friday night an outbreak of fire occurred in the borough, but it was quickly dealt with by the fire brigade.
