A quarter of a million natives are employed in the Hand’s great goldmining- industry. ' Their labour is cheap, for they are paid-an average of 2/- a day. Without them this great industry would be completely paralysed. They come from the kraals in the remotest parts of Portuguese East Africa, Swaziland, Basutoland, and many other native territories to work, in the gold mines.
