Walton, S.M., when Harry; Hubbard, of Opotiki; contractor (Mr Hodgson) sued James Ross, an Opotiki factory employee (Mr East) .for £lB 13s, damages 'through being iattacked by defendant's pig. dog in a ; public street on Januax-y 3 last. Plaintiff said" that the dpg was riatixrally savage and attacked him; without cause. The defence was that the dog got away*- from tlie control of the person ■ leading it and attacked plaintiff when ho provoked it in attempting to catch it. • Judgment was given for plaintiff Tor £l3 13s arid costs, £5 13s 6d. FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE GUTTED. OPOTIKI, April 11. A firo which broke out at midnight gutted two rooms in a fivercomcd house in St. John Street, Op** otitki, owned and occupied by Mrs Margaret Skipper,, considerable damage also being done to the rest of the house of smoke arid water. There was no one. in the house when the lire broke oxxty Mrs Skipper being at Levin and her son away for the night, so that, the fire had !l £°°d hold when the brigade arrived soon after the siren sounded. The brigade did remarkably good work, getting the fire under almost at once. The insurances, are held by the N.Z Insurance Co., being* £650 on the house and contents including washhouse, piano and effects. MAORI SERIOUSLY INJURED. Further examination of Topi Pone, who* [was severely in.jur£cd at Maraonui yesterday, when a bullock dray capsized on him, shows that the spine is ' seriously, fractured which may result in permanent paralysis. His condition otherwise s fairly satisfactory.
