council-’r Monthly meeting

Cook County affairs were dealt with at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday, when Mr Chas. Matthews . presided! over thefollowing Crs. W. G. Shorrntt, J.vO. N. Thomas, ~T. E. Benson,- E. H. Baleen, P. S. Bowen, T. Tomhleson, P.. A. Shanks, S. T. Gray and-.M. T. B. Hall. Messrs Dalgoty and- Co., wrote stating that the firm’s drovers were not permitted to graze sheep belonging to clients on county roads. The .letter was received. Messrs W. A. Brown, -G. Brown, and H. Homan, of Waerenga-a-hika, wrote asking that certain work' be carried out on the road leading to their —The matter w n s referred to the riding member and engineer with power to act. Mr E. Walpole., district telegraph engineer, advised that cutting or trees was necessary on Riverside road in order to prevent interference with the lines. —The matter was referred to the chairman and riding member. Mr R. W. Halbert.,. commissioner for the Waihirerc blocks, sought permission to- lay a pipe along the road from the Waihirere Domain to the cook-house at the Maori pa —The work Was approved. Crs Thomas, Gray and Rherratt were appointed a- sub-committee t 0 net in connection with the King's Jubilee celebrations. The county ranger, Mr E. Angus Cameron, reported seizing 115 hca'-ii of stock for impounding during the past month. ENGINEER’S REPORT. • The report- of the engineer (Mr. K. P. Jones) included the following: —Ridings, General—“Gisborne Riding.—Good progress is being made with the maintenance gravelling of most of the roads m this ridfing. Whilst- considerable more gravel is desirable to nroduce a first class job, n good job is being mado with the money available. The Maliungn. drain is badly in need of attention before the winter and whilst no money is available for this work it is realised that some improvements should be effected'. It is proposed to concentrate the unemployed! men in this locality, on this work at an edify date. Good progress i-s being' made by a. similar Rarig on the main outlet drain in Makawri “Muriwnii Riding A eon si d ora bio improvement has been effected in the drains in the Marnctaha- drainage area, and work now being carried out by the East Coast Commissioner should produce further improvement. Brunt-oil’s road is receiving constant (attention as a result of the heavy cartage from the county quarry on to the various works.. In view of the heavy carting involved in the coming season’s works it is desirable that consideration be given to the propo-sal to bitmninize this roadOwing to lack-' of gravel supplies, the contractor lias fai'.ed to make delivery of the necessary maintenanco gravel on Tbtangi and other roads in. the Ngatapa locality. It is proposed to carry out this work with material from Patutaihi quarry at- an early date. “Pouawa Riding.—A start has been made with the delivery of maintenance gravel on Riverside road', but the supply has been discontinued dur in,g the past week, to enable- the borough council to obtain supplies from Kaiteratahi for their hot mix work. “Taruhciu Riding.—Good progress is being made by the Public Works Department with the world on the Tamileru creek. Maintenance gravel is being spread 1 on a number of the riding roads, and the usual general maintenance work has been carried out. “Te Aroha Riding.—Pressure of work has not permitted the maintenance gang to complete th© patching out of metaf. from depots on the Tahunga Road, hut it is anticipated that an early start will be made with this work. Minor repairs were necessary t-o Stafford’s road bridge during the month. •VMnirot/o Riding.—General (maintenance work is deceiving attention throughout the riding. The Public Works Department are making g.°od progress with the metalling of five miles of the Hangaroa-Waikareniioana road as far as Von. Pcin’s. Maintenance metal has been patched out on the lower end of this road: and repairs arranged for on the lower end °f the Parakanapa r-oacS-“Waimata- Riding.—ln company with Or. Tlombleson an inspection /was made of portion of this riding during the month. The ArnkfHi road was traversed . as far as Traifonl’s, anj certain maintenanceworks arranged for. Certain of the riding roads arc duo for attention and patching work will be carried out as soon as supplies of material are available. Further investigation is taking place in connection with the proposed renewal of the river protection wall o n Riverside road. —Main .Highways’, Maintenance — “Gisborne Wairoa via Morore.—The bituminous surface -has been reseated from Gin to 9m. The flanks of biie bitumen have been graded with) the power grader. “Gisborne Wairoa via Hangaroa.— The bituminous surface has been resealed from G.72m to 9.25 m and l n two-coat seal applied between 10.2 m and 11.2 m. (The ftntersocniim at BVunton’s road has been sealed. The gravel section between 11.2 m and 14m ha-s been graded 1 nvith power grader. General surfacing work has been carried out- between 16m and 21m. “Gisborne Opotiki via Coast.—The flanks of the bitumen have been built ul> with, 300 cubic, yards of gravel and flanking with, clay is being ca-rrico out where necessary. Rtf-, ling, and binding are to commence- at once as the depth of loose metal is providing troublesome to motor traffic. “Contract No. 280 (Quarrying and Crushing of metal at Council’s quarry Patutahi). —The contractor is making a big effort to cope with all the’ demands for metal anj i- beyond several minor breakages, the plant is. functioning well.
