KEEN COMPETITION FOE- GOOD BEEF AND SHEEP RECENT PRICES EASILY MAIN-' ’ TATNED (Press A-&HOCJ-a-tlAn> AUCKLAND, April 10. Competition, was again good for all but plain cattle at the Westfield’ stock sale to-day, and recent price levels were easily maintained. The yarding of ox - beef was well up to the average, comprising 200 steers, while 600 cows and heifers represented the largest yarding for >sonie time In both classes there wore a number of exceptionally good lines of ox beef, and good quality cows and heifers were very firm at late rates. Inferior and plain -sorts were hard- to quit, the sale dragging noticeably when rough lines were offered. Extra choice ox -solid to 24s per 1001 b., choice and prime, 21s to 23sq secondary and plain, 17s to 19s; prime young cow and heifer beef, 20s to 235; other cow beef, 12s to 10s. Extra heavy prime steers s-old frim £lO to £ll ss; heavy prime, £8 15s to£9 17s 6d; lighter prime, £7 10s to £S 12s 6d ; light prime, £6 t-o £7 7s (icl; small and unfinished, £4 to £5 15s; extra prime young cows anct heifers, £6 10s to £7 10s; heavy prime, £5 7-s 6d; lighter prime, £3 J.Us tci £4 17s 6d; -other killable cows £1 10s to £3 7-s 6d. A full yarding of young calves included a fair proportion of good quality heavy vealers, for which the demand remained unchanged, late rates ruling. All othens- eased about 2s a head, though there were some improvements in the late .sales. Runners made 30s to 80s; vealers, 14s to 525. Doth the sheep and lamb sales were conducted in very heavy rain. Fat wethers and ewes were penned in .fewer numbers than usual, the quality being well up to- the average. There was a ready demanvl throughout, with prices firm at late rates. Lambs were also in full supply, and sold well at current vanes. Wethers, prime, made 20? to 28s: unfinished, 18s to 19s 6d; ewes, prime, 16s to 21s 6d; unfinished, 8s to 15s. 6d. Lambs, prime, 17® to 22s 6d; unfinished, 10s to 16s 6d. The yarding -of fat pigs was an average one, with a plentiful supply of wcTl-finished baconers. Competition ivas more .spirited than it had been for some time, and a very firm market resulted. Some extra heavy baconers realised to 755. Store pigs show eel a slight- improvement with a hotted demand. Baconers made 48s to 735, porkers, 28s to 435; large stores Iss to 20s—prices per lb., baconers and porkers, 5.1 to ssd. There was a keen sale for all classes of ewes, particularly better sorts. Extra- good 2-th made to- 31s; ordinary 2-tli, 22s to 24s 6d;, - medium 2-th Romney ewes, to 265; extra good 4-vear halfbred to 23s 2d; ordinary to medium 4-yr, to 20s; good iS.m.
