In addition to the shipping normally coining to Haifa',, the storms which have been sweeping the of Palestine from Jaffa to the north have forced a considerable' number of ships to take refuge in Haifa harbor. DOUBLING- QFAY. At the time, the harbor was built the quay was made .long enough for four ships to tie up alongside but the plans contained provisions for extension of the quay, if, necessary, by another 900 meters, enabling the accommodation of'another four slops. This extension is to be made as soon as final confirmation is received from the Colonial Office in London. The cost-, of the' construction of the new quayside is. estimated at r-CCdOtOOO It is thought the work wifi, commence as soon as the oil dock, now being constructed to receive crude oil through the Ivaq pipeline and discharge it into waiting ships, is com pleiad. DAB 808 OFTGPOWN While it had been thought the harbor would' meet Palestine's needs for some years to come, this is the second enlargement the Government has had to make since the opening of .the harbor 15 months ago In April 1934, just six months after tho completion of the harbor the High Commissioner authorized the expenditure of £20,000 for the construction of a third "transit, shed in the customs zone in order'to afford' additional facilities for the storage of cargo, particularly the, shipments of citrus fruits.
