A denial that the police intervened! and ordered tho boxing contest between Jarvis andi Hawes at Ilawera, to be stopped was made today. It was explained tluvt the referee, Mr Alan Maxwell, acted on his own initiative It appeared to the spectators through •activity in the corners, ak though the police had intervened, hut if* D now plain that that.wag not so.
