NOTES AND NEWS. Falkland, .who is' due to run in iho Spring Plate at Riccarton on Saturday, is Sir Charles Clifford’s Derby candidate. He has not done much racing, but was a winner at Dunedin last month, and was third in his race at Motukarara on Saturday. As might be expected of a Stony hurst product., Falkland I ss bred well enough for a Derby, being by Winning Hit from Brave Deed, by Antagonist from Gallantry bv Oianranaid- Falkland is a brother to Zeebrugge, twho was showing useful form when lie met .with the mishap that ended Ids career at Trentham last season. * ■ The London Sporting Life says that immediately after Hyperion passed the winning post in the Si. I.egor, Lord Derby remarked, as he mopped -his- brow : <! T. have been away for a thinning cure, but, believe mo, an experience like this is far more effective and much cheaper.” Then, despite .the groat excitement .of bis victory, Lord Derby showed again that human touch which has so endeared' him ' to., the ' public. A policeman saluted] as Lord Derby passed. His. Lordship eyed the constable's war ribbons,, and said: “Where did yon win the Y-C. ?” “At the retirement, in ’fourteen, sir”, answered the policeman. Lord Derby thrust out his . hand. Looking as proud if he himself had . won the St. Lcger, the constable shook hands, and mutual congratulations were exchanged by peer and P.O.

The withdrawal of Polydora and Takakua has left the New Zealand Cup without any pronounced favorite. The issue is generally regarded as very open, but, since the acceptances, Palantna appears likely to occupy first position in the public estimation. Prior- to leaving Wingaiui Palantna did an excellent Cup trial, over a mile and a half. ' She was picked up by Blazon over the last mile, but 'she ran away from Blazon at.the finish, recording 53sec for the. last half. Her trainer, F. •Shaw, is very satisfied with her prospects,, and says the home trial was ’excellent, as Blazon is an extra good hack, and Palantua left him several lengths at the finish, while 53see: for the last half-mile at Wingatui is equal to 49sec. at Riccarton. She is one of the runners who will he (well seasoned with racing, andi on .the way she beat Cricket Bat here in August- over ten furlongs, the distance will not trouble her. —“Dominion.’’ * # Jaloux, who will be tone of tho New Zealand Cup runners again this year,, has run fourth in tho last two Cups. Twelve months ago he was purchased on the eve of tho race, by Mr P. P. Campbell, former owner of Oompris, and ho has since been trained by O. Davoy. Jaloux has often shown promising form, but he has just as often failed. His second at Banks Peninsula "on Saturday suggests he may be prominent in the Cnp running.
