DISSENSION IN N.Z. LEGION

SEQUEL-TO LEADER’S PUBLICITY METHODS. “DP- BEGG OUGHT TO BE GAGGED.” (Press Assoeiationl. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct, 19. At a meeting of the Hororata centre of the New Zealand Legion lastevening, a. resolution was carried: “That as members of this centre joined the Legion under the impression that it stood for the reform of the system of government and the Political education of the people only, they regret to see published in the newspapers schemes like that of D l '. ■Campbell Begg on immigration, which, although it may not have the official approval of the Legion, is naturally associated in the public mind with it.

“They consider that the publication. has done a. considerable amount of Inarm to the Legion’s cause in this district, and would like to have the assurance of Hie national executive -that no publicity will in future be •given to any policies of this kind, and, wjth a view to having the importance of this matter put before the national executive in the most convincing manner, this , centre suggests to the executive of the Canterbury division: (1) That other centres and divisions he written to to ask their support; (2) that the national executive b e approached with a- petition from the division asking fo r the assurance mentioned.”

The mover, Mr. J. W. D. Hall, sHd such a scheme as this would cause n split in the Legion. The seconder, Mr. G. 11. Grigg, said Dr. Begg ought t 0 be gagged. Hie Hororata, centre is one of th© largest country centres of the Legion in Canterbury. NATIONAL EXECUTIVE’S REPLY. LEGION’S FULL AIMS OVERLOOKED BY CRITICS. (Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The telegram concerning Dr. Campbell Begg was referred to the national executive of the Legion in Wellington; whose comment is that the Horotatit centre has evidently overlooked, or forgotten, the Legion’s full aims and objects.
