TINIROTO WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

The monthly meeting of the Tiniroto Wnmojr’s Institute was held in iho local hall on Wednesday last. Airs. P. Richardson presiding over a fair attendance of members.

At the conclusion of routine business an interesting demonstration on ibe making of a chill’s knitted slipper was given by Airs. Law, to whom a warm voto of thanks was accorded on the motion of the president.

A resume- of the proceedings at the recent half-yearly council meeting of tho Poverty Bay Federation of Women’s Institutes was presented by the Institute's delegate, Airs. Long.

A feature of the afternoon was a wonderful display of tulips grown by Airs. Whyte, the choice blooms being ■great! y ad mired. Tea was dispensed by Airs. Whyte and Aliss Fahey. DANCE AT TINIROTO. The members of tile Tiniroto school committee were responsible for the organisation of a vc-ry successful dance held An the local ball on Saturday night, following a footabll match promoted on behalf of tho occasion by the IT.angn.roa Sub-Union.

In .suite of the somewhat unpleasant weather, there was a large attendance, and the programme of modern and old-time dances went with a swing from beginning to end.

The simple, but effective, decorations created a happy, festive atmosphere, and both the floor, and music were all that could be desired. The duties of Ai.C. were most, efficiently carried out by. Air. A. Richardson, who also, in his capacity of secretary, contributed much to the success of the function, while AH’. Gibbon made a very capable doorkeeper.

The Black and White; orchestra gave of its best; the musicians responding most generously to the (repeated demands for encores.

A delectable home-made supper was Provided by the ladies of the district and served informally during a pleasant interval. - > ' •

The opening of the Poverty Bay Basketball Tennis Club fur the 193334. .season took place on Saturday afternoon under the happiest of auspices and proved very (successful. The courts were declared open by the patroness, Airs. CL 11, Scents, who, in a very happy manner, extended a warm welcome to The large at■tendance of members and visitors, and wished the club every success during the coming season. DANCE AND CARD PARTY. 'J’he monthly dance and fiag fiv e hundred tourney organised by St. John’s Anglican- Ladies’ Guild wa s held in the Oddfellows Hall on Alonday night, and although not as largely attended as usual was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The card tourney was capably supervised by Air. Healy and honours were annexed by Air. and Mrs. Colebrook and Alisses Lovelock and Cooney, the prizes for the players holding the most flags being awarded in Aliss O. Stevens and Air. Stevens.

Sparkling dance music was stippl-cd by Airs. Aitken, and much-appreciat-ed- extras were 'contributed by AirHill, who also carried out t-be duties of AUG. In a very efficient manner.

The programme included a Monte Carlo waltz contest, which proved very popular, and was won by Miss Hyde and Air.. Annabel. Tbo excellent supper arrangemenis were in the capable hand* of Alesdames. The weather was all that could be desired and the large number of guests were able to wander at will in the picturesque riverside garden, admiring its many beauties.

.Indoors, masses of icvojy blooms were used with artistic effect, . bril-linnth’-huod ranunculi, Iceland poppies and tulips predominating in the decorative scheme.

Two cleverly-arranged competitions, “Nursery Rhymes” , and “Members ol tbo Professions,’’ proved highly diverting and were, won by Airs. 11. Daniel and Airs. McCullough respectively, each being rewarded with a charming gift. ,

A delectable tea was served informally. At the c'nso of tho afternoon.. Airs C. Bavly. president of the guild, complimented Aliss Davison on the success of the function, and thanked her, on behalf of the guild, for Tier much-enjoyed hospitality.

The hostess was wearing a handsome frock of bottle-green satin benuto ornamented with floral crepe, do chine in contrasting green, fawn and red tonings. A G ARDEN PARTY. Yesterday afternoon Airs CL Barron placed her pretty garden at the disposal of the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle and the members spent a very happy time exploring the many walks and finding .charming nooks and crannies.

The picturesquely placed pergola, completely embowered in wisteria delighted the guests, while the tiny creek bordered with delicate ' ferns and spanned by a quaint rustic bridge was also greatly admired . WABSFGAKH WOMENS INSTITUTE.

There was . a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the AVaingake Women’s Institute held in the local school on Thursday last, and a very pleasant and profitable time was spent. The roll call, “Aly Favourite Quotation” met with an excellent response. The monthly competition, “some novelty” was keenly contested, the ingenuity displayed, both in design and execution, reflecting the greatest credit on the competitors. Honors were annexed by Airs. F. Shanks, Aliss Shanks gaining second place. Arrangements were discussed in regard to holding a garden party at tho home of tho president next month to celebrate the institute’s third birthday. RUGBY UNION CABARET. The Poverty Buy Rugby Union finalised its season oil Saturday evening with a most successful cabaret and presentation of trophies. The function was held at Le Grand, !, nd altliough the attendance was smaller than anticipated, the programme wont with a swing from start to finish, everyone thoroughly entering into the spirit of the occasion. Tho music, supplied by Gbrisp s 0 1 - chestra, was all that could be des-r----cd, and the cool 'atmosphere was an added incentive to dancing. > During a pleasant interlude, All. G. H.
